Thoughts on optics for a 358 win

Assumed your 358 BLR isn't a takedown model. I need a Scout rifle that's stowable so I chose the takedown model, and with a barrel-mounted scope it stays zeroed upon reassembly. Burris makes a variable 2-7x scout scope but it's about twice the weight of either the Burris 2.75x or Leupold 2.5x scout scopes.

No issues with the magnification of my Leupold 2.5x. Entirely adequate for heavy game out to intermediate ranges.

If for some reason I wanted a receiver-mounted scope on my 358 BLR I would choose the Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm scope to keep it light, compact and handy.

You can't just taws a James Bawnd thingie up'ear and nawt discuss the whut-fores 'bout it.....................can you?
Details ....................... details....................details.

I'm mystified...:p

Not going to hijack the thread unless the OP wants more details but for myself I was hesitating between iron sights and a low powered scope. I found the Aimpoint H34L to be the perfect balance between both. Think iron sights for modern times. Shooting with both eyes open is, well, eye opening... Okay that was a terrible pun but you guys get it. I'll post a quick review within a couple of weeks. I will also have an H-2 on a .308 to play around with.

I picked up a couple of these new and are surprisingly clear and bright. Made in the '70s according to the literature in the box. I have one on my Mini-14 and on my shotgun.

Would you have a picture showing the scope itself in relation to the front sight and the exposed hammer (if there is one)?

I am looking to see how such a scope would fit on a BLR .358 Win.

Thanks,

Whats the range and application? I have a Trijicon 1-4x with a 30mm tube and post sight. Awesome combo in the forest, where shots are 10 - 100m. Huge FOV, can shoot with both eyes open in close. Enough magnification for medium range. I'm looking at maybe a 1-6x next, to extend the range a little bit.

My Dad had an old Banner or Scopechief (I forget which) 1.5-4.5 for years and years, never let him down on a 660 Rem in 350 Mag. They're a nice, compact straight tube optic, and you still see the odd NIB Japanese-made ones around. tradex had some, and someone on EE was selling some a while back.

Thanks,

The Leupold 2.5x Scout is the only scope for my 358 BLR. An old Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x20mm is shown here on my Mossberg 930 12 gauge autoloading shotgun.

Thanks to both DTM5, Slamfire, and hoytcanon.

I just ordered a VX-3 1.5-5x20mm (gloss finish) from another CGNer. Would like to post pictures once it is mounted on my BLR .358 Win (for deer up to moose/bear to 250 -300 yards (you tell me what is reasonable) to answer DTM5's question). I don't know how to post pictures, so if any of you can tell me it would be appreciated.

In the end, I chose the look, lightness and handiness of the low profile/no objective bell set-up like DTM5 has. I wanted to avoid the typical larger scope, and I am too chicken to try a "scout" IER scope like Slamfire has on his BLR...maybe someday, especially since this will be my second BLR in .358 Win (one is a take-down model, the other is not). Slamfire, how badly do you think that having my scope mounted on the receiver of my take-down will impact my zero greatly, compared to mounting it forward on the barrel?

Thanks again to all of you for your replies.

I have a takedown in .308 as well,....and had a Leupold vx-1 1-4 20mm on the receiver. I sighted it in at 100m, took it apart and put it back together several times, no issues whatsoever. Maybe a couple inches in variance each time. I couldn't really notice as it could have been me or the heated barrel. I'm not really a bench rest guy, so if I can get within a couple inches of bullseye I'm happy no matter which side it lands on :) Anyway, I eventually put a Leupold 2.5X IER scout scope on it. Its really cool. Limited FOV but a great alternative to open sights.

Here is a link to a thread about posting pictures. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...-fast-simple-Posting-pictures-using-Imgur-com
