I have the opportunity to purchase a new-in-box 700 SPS Tactical in .308 for $800 taxes and shipping inc. ($770 after rebate). Is this a good deal? What is the chance that the higher cdn $ will make for a better deal next year? Any thoughts?
Thanks.

A match barrel cost $500-$600 installed. I can never figure out why $800 would be out of line for a complete rifle. You either want it now for that price or take your chances on what the CAN/US $$$ will do in the next year. What happens if it goes back to a .62 dollar:eek:
With the high turn over of stock the US retailers will always be cheaper then a Canadian retailer. Look into bringing one in from the US on your own, it isn't that hard for an individual.
In the end it comes down to how badly you want it and how much you are willing to pay and if you want to keep you money supporting the Canadian retailers.

Sniperland,
Is that the rifle you want?
If it is check around all the usual online dealers, including site sponsers. That will give you an idea of the going rate.

If this is a private sale, ask why the rifle is for sale? If something requires warranty work are you covered? Who do you take it to or send it to if something isn't right? If it's a private sale these are the questions you should be asking. Because if it's around the same price or only slightly less then why not just buy it new from a place where you know you can take it back? Again if a private sale, I'm always leary of prices that are close to the store price. Even if it's NIB it's still second hand. Unless it's a particulary hard to find product or collectable then the price should reflect the fact that you lose out on the safety net of an actual retailer.

If you're set on a Remington. Decide what you plan on doing with the rifle. Then look at the Remington web site and find the model that both meets your needs and that you like. Next find the best price. Read reviews etc before buying so you don't end up with buyers remorse. A hundred dollars or even two hundred dollars for the rifle you really want is money well spend on the long term. Long term it will be cheaper.

Good luck to you. Let us know what you buy.

Here you go:

Or save up and wait for a LTR if you want a short barrel tactical rifle (same accuracy but not as good for long range).

The comparisons below are for .308 rifles.

Wholesale sports (Prices tend to be a bit high, retails the 700P for $1129, The LTR at $1200 and the XCR tactical at $1300.

Wolverine $1050 for P, $1125 for LTR.

Anyways that should get you started for searching. The rest is up to you.
Good luck.

Woa! Way too much for that rifle. These go for about $550 stateside. I know, I know, you can't really compare the two, import costs, doing business in Canada, etc...

Having said that, I have a price quote from someone who's name shall no longer be spoken for much less than that. Only problem is he hasn't received a single one yet.

FWIW most common price I've heard is around $750 and I still think that's too much.

Unless Sniperman really means the XCR tactical rather than the SPS then I agree there are better prices and or options out there.

I think I'd pass on that one, unless it was an XCR. In that case I'd definately go for it.
