I know these guns don’t have the best record, finiky with ammo and such. A buddy of mine use to have one a few years ago that was better suited as a paper weight. Anyone have any good luck with these? I was looking for a cheap 22lr. Pistol and Cabelas had these on for $300 so I picked one up. Hopefully they have improved over the last few years?

No they haven’t.
Jammomatics. Need high vel ammo and then they might work. CCI Minimags are your best chance. YMMV. Good luck! At least the price is good.
PS Don’t even think of using anything Winchester. You’ll have more luck throwing the rounds downrange.

I've owned 3 of them over the years and never had a single issue with any of them. Who knows, perhaps I was lucky and got those rare good ones, but I definitely have no complaints about them. Never had any ftf or fte issues, shot everything that I fed them.
