I desperately want to shell out the 1600 clams for one... stupid idea? or stupid like a fox? I just want to blast things with it once a month (exploding targets, watermelon... etc)

Why not?

The heart wants what the heart wants.

Buy a .45-70 lever gun to go with it.

If your range says that it allows paper targets only, then shoot at milk cartons filled with colored water. ;)

I think I can also shoot small hanging plastic things like bottles... None of which will fill the void... The lever gun is sold idea though as a companion. I love the calibre.

Your range allows exploding targets and watermelons?...

Lol no...

Had one, fantastic built guns. Wouldn't shoot Hardcast bullets well at all. But loved Jethunters softer cast bullets. Definitely a head turner. And you can hot rod the 45-70 in it as much as your body can stand.

At my best times I had 3 of them... The last one is just awaiting transfer approval. My experience with the BFR 45/70 is:
Trigger is excellent. The thing is well made with tiny tolerances...if you want to put up a smoke show and shoot BP loaded 45/70s,it takes about 10 rounds and the cylinder won't turn anymore without cleaning.
It's a heavy Revolver, so the regular 45/70 loads you can buy for trap door rifles are actually pleasant to shoot, even with a 405 gr bullet...recoils like a, lets say, S&W 29 in .44 mag. If you use ( reload ) for what the gun is capable of - they built in in .450 Marlin, so I'm talking about 45/70 405gr @ 1950/2000 fps( from a rifle)- 5 round is good, after 10 My wrists need a 1 day rest before doing that again... but then, I'm a light frame guy, that's 50, so might be different for you.
The later load always was a show...at the range, you pull the trigger and the neighbor has an accidental discharge because he wasn't ready for your pressure wave. That load lifts the dust off the ground in front of you! Usually they stop shooting 'till you're done, "what the F@ck was that, buddy?" is a common question, and if you offer, only 3 of 10 will try it. Don't overdo it, as it can lead to flinch! Keep both elbows locked, so the BFR goes over your head instead in your face, and with the stout loads, never use a rest...as that seems to magnify the recoil.
So, to answer your first question:
No, not a stupid idea, the thing is not near any means of being practical and is expensive to feed...But it is a hell of a lot of fun, I guarantee you that. And therefore worth the 1600. ( wouldn't have sold my last one if it wasn't for income issues )
BTW, I only used Remington 405 gr jacketed soft points in that

thank you... i agree that i will likely shoot it isosceles and not weaver... although i will definitely try it 1-handed a few times... i'm a big guy and have fired large calibers... but i agree, my 1 time with it has me itching to buy one... the guy who shared with me at the range was shooting this beast .308 rifle and the 45-70 revolver... let me keep all of the brass (which really made no sense to me... who the hell doesn't reload if you're into calibers like that or at least keep the brass)... anyway... need to figure out how to bribe the wife into letting me do this...

i agree about the kick... i found it less powerful that the SW500 mag... didn't shoot them on the same day so just going from memory... but it's hilariously loud an just nasty looking at ~13 inches long...

Great gun, a guy at the range let me shoot his and it was sweet. Made me want one but couldn't find one at that time so went with the .460xvr. Love it as well, starting to reload for it and it has lots of options from mild to wild.

They had their debut in the movie "Looper"...everyone was shooting them one handed, probably easy with blanks. I tried doing one handed,too...could not hit $hit with it, but probably looked mighty cool doing so, LOL

They seem well built, but most people that own them rarely shoot them. I bet most don't even have 100 rounds through them.

Yup, a 100 rounds equal 300 bucks already...it's a bit cheaper to fire the 45acp. My first BFR was bought used and I put about 180 trough it, my second was new and i didn't fire it ( just bought because the price was right ) and my 3rd had 20 rounds trough it to sight the scope in.
