Thoughts on the following cartridges? 300PRC, 338WM, 35 Whelen, 416 Rigby, 458 Win

That is a weird-azzed list... "under considerstion; .300 PRC & .458 Win Mag, which should I go with?"

Having said that... you could consider the .338 WM from your list... shooting a 230 ELD-X @ 2900+ fps... you can reach way out there with considerable "smack."

My 338 RUM shot 225 Accubonds at. 3225 fps with a lot of H1000 powder ! Put that wimpy 338 WM to SHAME ! :p:popCorn:RJ

Although I don't hunt big game where long shots are the norm I always thought a 340wby would be ideal. However I used a 300wm when I thought I'd need to reach out
200 yards is long range for me for big game and my 458wm sighted for 50 yards is about this 8" low at 200 using 400gr ppsn woodlighs at 2400fps. With the cross hairs right on the top of a Starbucks double shot can the bullet hits just underneath. Basically a tall boy can size. Not bad for an elephant cartridge. Not a long range option compared to flatter shooting rounds

I have no experience with the 300prc but it and the 338wm are tops for shooting longer ranges from your list

Sounds like 338WM is the overall pick for longish hunting duties and the 300PRC for actual long range shooting.

Are there any other comparable cartridges that do these same things better (or cheaper?) that haven't been mentioned yet?

300RUM, 30 Nosler , the few Weatherby in that bullet size, 338RUM, 30-338, I’m sure there is plenty of them!

I think everyone needs to rethink the 35 Whelen when they think it can’t perform out to 400 yards. Speer load data is pushing a 250 grain to 2800 fps and the data from Sierra has the 225 SBT doing 2900fps. The factory Hornady Superformance 200gr load does 2950 fps in my Whelen(s).

Now my real thumper is my 35 WSM (Sambar) with the Barnes 200TTSX going 3000fps out of a 20 inch barrel with a healthy does of R17. My brother used my Sambar to take his 5x5 elk at 415 yards this Fall. Complete pass through with the TTSX and dead right there with a heart shot.

For true long range then the 300 PRC for sure. Never played with one but the ballistics look excellent although in a true hunting situation the 300 win Mag will pretty much do the same and components are easy to find.

For best balance of energy on game and moderate recoil the 35 Whelen and the 9.3x62 (or 9.3x74R) are the ticket. Load up some .358 158 grain pistol bullets in your Whelen to 3000 fps and watch the coyotes explode!

7 mm Remington Magnum..300 Winchester Magnum.
Those are proven and you can find ammo in almost any place you hunt in North America.
The new kid on the block, not so.

That is a sweet little number! What do you run that in?

Edit… was referring to Hoyts 35-375 Ruger

This .358-375 Ruger was built on an Stainless M77 Mark II .338 WM donor, using a rechambered Mark II .350 Rem Mag barrel, it is in a B&C stock with a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10X40 B&C mounted... my current load pushes the 225 AB to 3175 fps. I have only taken it out to 500 yards, but it is a flat shooter... on game? One deer... at 40 yards... note to self... "don't do that again!"
