Hi everyone, I'm looking for some input on the Remington 700 VS SF (26" heavy fluted stainless barrel free floated in an H.S. Precision stock, in .308 stainless action). I have the opportunity to pick it up used for under $1000 without scope.

I'm just curious if anyone has any first hand experience with this model, particularily regarding consistency and reliability. There seems to be limited info on the web regarding this particular remmy.

What I'm ultimately after is non-competition target shooter (upto 500 yds) that I can also chase deer with for two weeks of the year. Thanks in advance.

I have one in 204, identical except for the barrel. $1k is pretty good, I won't tell you what I paid for mine:eek: Shoots great, love the stock.

The one I suspect that you're looking at is the older VS with the older HS stock? The older HS stock doesn't have the palm swell and the forend isn't as thick. Also the finish isn't stainless, but the bolt is jeweled. There are a number of good choices out there. You might want to consider a 20" or 24" barreled rifle though if you want to chase deer.

Thanks for the advice all. I agree that a 24" bbl would suit me better. My biggest worry about the used VS SF is that the complete history of the gun is unknown. Even though it is in very good shape, the seller no idea on the number of owners or number of rounds down the tube. I fear I may be buying someone elses problems.

Fortunately I've found a brand-spankin' new 5-R for just a little more, and chosen to go with it instead.

All factory Remingtons shoot about the same. More money does not mean more accuracy. As long as you keep that in mind, carefully consider the value in the esthetics and ergonomics when you decide to pay for one.

Good choice. That was also my decision. So far I've been very impressed. It shoots like a custom rifle. I'm also finding price to features that the 5R is the Remington rifle to buy. Every time I consider buying another Remington, I end up picking up another 5R.

Hi,

I've got a VSSF in .308 and it's amazing. I've personally shot over 1000 rounds through mine. I've had it for a number of years and have used it hunting in the US and throughout Canada. I also own a larger caliber Sendero the only difference between the two besides the caliber is the name on the barrel.

My accuracy is amazing, I've started competing in Fclass restricted with it, I have had no issues engaging target out to 1000 m.

My average 100m group is .4" - .5"
This rifle is one of the best rifles I own. I've compared this rifle's accuracy to my .223 BVSS Mod 12 Savage, my remington is lighter easier to hunt with (I'm not worried about hurting anything as I do on my Savage's laminate stock). All in all it's an amazing rifle. If you don't take it let me know where it's at, I take another one and set it up for different ranges for FClass shooting.
