What do I think?

Fixed magazines are an early military idea so the troops don't fire too much of their limited combat loads. Detachable box magazines have been proven better and more effective. So, one tick in the box for the SKS D.

But the Chinese model is a commercial production run of something close to, but not the same as whatever they had enough to give their peasant soldiers in the span between bolt actions in the 1950s and their copy of the AK in the 1970s. Any I've handled had their lowest grade soft tropical hardwood stocks and minimal finish tuning compared to every military model. For being a commercial model, one X in the box against the SKS D.

For Canadian shooters, it is another idea that seems to have a lot of followers. That is why the price for D's is high and growing. So, another tick in favour.

Others can chime in, but that is my opinion.

I used to own one.
I liked that it used detachable AK mags.
I did not like that the mag well was a little loose and finicky, so it took a little extra time to get mags in and out. I did not like that when compared to, say, an AR platform where mags are quick in and out.
However, it is one of the few semi auto, mag fed NR rifles left.....

Any feedback is good in my books. Whether positive or negative everyone has there own opinions. What's the value of these going for these days? I see everyday Sk's have gone through the roof.

I bought thinking it would be the cheaper replace for something like a type 81 or VZ58. Traditional rifle stock with the detachable magazine is not a good combo. It would be much improved with a pistol grip. The magazine is finicky to get in. I was not able to load full mags in because of the design. If we had 30rd mags that I could only put in 28 or 29 I would not care but only putting in 4rds is a real buzz kill. Otherwise like all SKS, rifle is fine

I think I sold it sooner than I should have. I have been happy with my normal SKS but I kinda regret selling it. Modern price, there is one on the EE for 1000 and it has been bumped numerous times. They should not go for more than $700 if you ask me.

I have owned a couple of these rifles - neither impressed much. They tend to not be as reliable in the feeding department as the good ole hingeplate sks's. They are definitely fussy with mags. Personally, the design is kind of a bastardized design that can have potential issues. If you get one that works flawlessly then you are golden.

The main downside is that the AK mags are pinned for AK's, which have a thinner bolt body. The bolt on the SKS intrudes further into the mag, so if you're loading an AK mag pinned to 5 for an AK, you can only load 4 for an SKS D on a closed bolt.

They look neat in their original dress though.

I posted this before but what the heck I'm posting it again because there's always interest in the D version. I've owned a couple Russian Tula SKS rifles and really enjoyed them. Every time I look back I wish I would have picked up one of these D versions when I had the chance, oh well.

"Back in the last days before C-68 magazine capacity limits, in 1991 at the Le Baron's Yonge St location I looked at this rifle new in the box. I had never seen an sks before and I was going to buy it but for some reason the bayonet turned me off, what was I thinking?

From the 1991 Le Baron's catalog that I picked up when I was in their store that day:"

I've owned two. You nicely summarized my experience. Getting mags to lock in place was NEVER as easy as it is on a Vz, T81, or any AK

I have the original SKS-D made by Norinco & works good. I see one sold @ auction today for $750. ( hammer price) .

The Norinco D models for me were very inaccurate (5plusmoa) whereas the russian or chinese mil versions can be had at 2-3 moa if you get a good one. The mag system is finicky and the stock is too short. When they were 129 bucks back in the day as a kid tho it was still fun as heck. I sold mine and bought a weber bbq off the profits.

haha, you are funny. Nothing special about the D model, same hype as usual, use the word AK and everything goes up in price.

Can't afford a type 81, let's buy a SKS-D, same thing, right?

Meanwhile "freedomisntfree" is still dwelling on his brittle relationship with Canada Post, move on, nothing new here.

I can’t decipher what you are saying nor do I see the humour in my post. The sks-d is one of the worst designed
sks accuracy wise.
