For the past few months, I have been trying to decide what type of deer/moose I should get.
I noticed the Vanguard Sporter DBM is on sale at WSS. Does anyone have any opinions on them? I had considered a Savage 114 American Classic. How would the two compare?

Thanks

For the past few months, I have been trying to decide what type of deer/moose I should get.

Not meaning to be too much of an a$$ here, but I did have a bit of a giggle. In terms of the type of deer or moose you should get, I would suggest one that has four legs, horns and eats grass. No a green one with wheels.

Ok, fun is over now. I worked a DBM once. I did not really care for that magazine action. In fact, I am not too crazy at all about some of the magazine actions on the market because sometimes they wiggle around a bit too much and the result is an improper feed or jam.

The other drawback is more specific to reloading and seating bullet depth. Magazines quite often are too restrictive and will not allow seating to be set relative to the rifle.

Vanguard rifles are excellent. You might have to tweek your trigger though. The new ones have better triggers and a better stock (imo) as well as 3 position safety but there is nothing wrong with the "old" ones. They are on sale for cheap and an excellent buy.

I just picked up a Vanguard sporter in .308. On sale at Wholesale. Really like it thus far. Have the scope on. Waiting for a warm day to hit the range.

Online as well as in the catalog, it lists the Sporter as having the walnut stock, and the Sporter DBM as having an injection molded composite stock, although the picture looks like a walnut stock. Can anyone comfirm which stock it actually has?

Definitely has a walnut stock....I touched and rubbed one couple of days ago.

I wonder why they have it wrong in their catalog and online.
If I do buy one, I will be buying it online, so I just wanted to make sure I wasnt going to open the box and find out it was a synthetic stock.

What is your opinion on the gun?

I Think You'll Like It

I owned a Vanguard in .270, bought the mag. kit when they came out and it made a big difference in weight for me. Anytime you can drop 1/2 lb. or more off a rifle if your packing & hunting it helps. If you're just shooting at the range, no biggie.

I like the feel, balance and weight of the wood stocked sporter, have one on hold, pending another rifle sale. I still might pick it up. You'll like the drop out mag. , again if you hunt.
