Thoughts on wood stocks

I was looking into the AK style wood but I found the custom work to be expensive and Ironwood Designs to have unbelievable quality in wood that keeps the VZ58's look intact. Of course, everyone is different.

Your Yugo may use different wood and stain or just be oiled... it has a lot of red in it.

I mixed some colours together and got a medium brown out of it...

Hardware sets are hard to find. Last one I got was with a used set of wood from Ebay (a seller from the Czech Republic). This set was beat up and I did the whole thing in Red Oak and finished with Tung Oil - it looked pretty cool with the "been through a war" look. I have to search my hard drive for a pic...

After feeling the wood furniture on my VZ58, that's the only thing I'd have on there.

Wood sets aren't cheap... I got NOS wood sets cheaper on the EE than I did the beat up one from Ebay. Might be better off getting pristine, newly made stuff from I.D for $250 US or whatever they're charging nowadays.

I previously made a SVD stock for my SVT out of walnut. Walnut is very strong and offers a very "American brown rifle stock " sort of color, which I found difficult to stain to a more "Russian red" kind of color afterwards. Walnut is also expensive.

I just bought a bunch of Eastern maple blanks yesterday for my AK style CSA stock project.... Eastern maple is also very strong (used to make baseball bats) and is a very bright type of wood (pine color sort of), it is also half the price of walnut. Because it is bright, it is very easy to stain all sorts of beautiful colors....

I am o looking forward to seeing some of your sets finished especially after your SVD clone stock!!!!!!!!!!
You do, do great work man

I hope yours are way more durable then some other ones that have been done.

Non matching, beat up set on Ebay for $177 US (I found NOS matching sets on the EE for $130-140). I'm sure the availability has changed in the last year or so.

I'm aware of those sets on ebay, but I wouldn't buy beat up surplus.

My point was that a lot of junk is on Ebay for strong money. Unsure what's available here at the present, but I found some nice stuff for less than guys on Ebay are asking for ugly wood furniture.

Ironwood Designs has high quality new furniture and you can choose the wood used, for extra cost. You are still looking around $300 CDN or more when you factor in shipping in exchange. Either way, it's not a cheap endeavor. Wood just looks and feels great on the VZ58 rifle.
