Anyone here set up to thread a 20 gauge barrel for choke tubes? I've got a Savage 24C that desperately needs it done. I have no idea why they didn't incorporate a choke into the barrel of these guns...

Being that it is a .22/20 gauge over/under, will this pose any problems getting it on to the lathe?

Thanks!

Matthew

"...why they didn't incorporate..." Because they're low end shotguns. Adding changeable chokes would have driven the retail price too high.
Installing the tube is going to run you around $100 plus the cost of the tubes. That's about 1/3 the value of the gun.

It has no choke at all as it is. That's why I need to get this done. Turns out someone found this thread and PM'd me letting me know that he can do the work for me so thanks! :)

On a similar note, I contacted another company who advertises on here (who shall remain nameless for now) who told me that they could do the work depending on the thickness of the barrel wall. Seems reasonable to me; so since they are in ON and I live in NB, I asked for the tolerances so I could measure the barrel myself and save myself a shipping fee if in fact the barrel is too thin. They responded saying that due to liability, they couldn't give me this info.

Seriously? So if I post that a 20 gauge shotgun barrel should have an OD of .700 or larger and an ID of .626 or smaller, I could get sued? What liability is there in giving out the proper dimensions needed to properly choke a shotgun barrel?

Well, I like to be able to "reach out" so to speak. :) Maybe it's psychological, who knows, but any shotgun I hunt with must be choked. More than likely, it's because I'm such a damn clutz in the woods, I can't sneak up on anything! :D

The smallest diameter 20 gauge choke tube other than the very expensive Brilley tubes is the Tru-Choke. They are 0.675 inches in diameter. The the thinnest recommended wall thickness is 0.015" so the OD of the barrel must be at least 0.705 inches provided the OD is concentric with the bore (which it often is not). I won't install Tru-Choke tubes in a 20 gauge unless the OD is at least 0.715" .

Funny you should mention Tru-Choke... that's the same brand my gunsmith is using for mine.

The OD of my barrel is .727 and ID is .620. It appears to be concentric, but what do I know... and even if it's a little off, the gunsmith has a bit of "extra" to play with. :)

Either way, I'm just glad that it's finally gonna get done. Now all I have to do is:
-fit the forestock a little better (it's a little wobbly)
-shape the back end of it (the forestock) to better line up with the receiver
-sand off the factory finish and stain it with something to help bring out the grain

In the end, I think this will be a great little rifle/gun for bagging bunnies and grouse. :D
