Thread pitch of a Wby. Vanguard?

half guessing here, but I think they are 26mm x 1.5mm pitch...

PS...don't disengage the half nuts:D ..unless you're the type that likes to mess around with the change gears:)

Rembo,
I think I will avoid the change gears if possible. No, I know I will avoid the change gears. Is there a standard thread that is close to this? It would have to be very close here I am guessing. Also, is there a tap that could be run in the action to modify the threads to a standard?

I wouldn't do that.....you'll have a bastardized (real word) thread..that will only contact on a small percentage of the flank....bad news.

You can easily cut metric threads without swapping your change gears...first thread I cut on mine was a 6mm x 1.0 pitch...just don't disengage the half nut once engaged for cutting...stop the spindle and reverse the spindle to move the carriage back for another cut....retract the tool of course:D

Rembo,
I understand the idea of not disengaging the half nuts and backing it up and cutting again. But how would I set up to cut this thread. At what rate of advance would I want it moving?
Thanks,
Rob

if I can assume by "rate of advance" you mean the pitch or lead of the thread, you want it to advance 1.5mm or about .06 for each revolution of the spindle...if you can't get an exact 1.5mm pitch on your lathe, I wouldn't try it...

Rick,
My lathe is a Southbend and I see no provision for metric pitch or lead of thread. Is .06" correct or about? I have lead settings of .0594" and .0621" per revolution. If it's not right, I won't do it, it's not that important I am just wondering. Anyone want to swap a rifle with standard receiver threads for an unfired Weatherby Vanguard .338? Actually I have already listed it in the EE. I suppose I could rechamber to .340 Wby. too. Anyone have a reamer to sell or rent?
Thanks for the help guys.
Rob

Not yet, but I have an action for it now. You have a plan yet?
I think I might rebarrel this Vanguard to .375 Wby. I'll give the threading a go and get back to you.

Yo will find the thread will be to tight to thread on properly when you have reached proper thread depth. This can be remidied by painting the threads with a feltpen, screwing on the reciever tight enough to bind and then removing it. The side with no felt pen marks then can be filed with a 60 degree triangular safe file, under power preferebly. I wouldn't do this on a benchrest rifle, but it does work.
