Threading for Chokes

Barrels have to be measured to see what chokes can be done. Old Remington barrels are not the correct dimensions for Remington tubes. After market tubes have to be done. Often it is cheaper to buy a choke tubed factory barrel.

X2 recommendation for Casey at TacOrd!

I had Epps thread my Mossberg 590 Blackwater for chokes. Had heard that the 590 barrels were pretty thick and could be threaded for most chokes. Gunsmith at Epps however swore only thin walled chokes would work. Questioned him on this and he was adament ...only thin walled chokes would work...so somewhat hesitantly had him do the job. Only to discover later he was wrong and I could have it threaded for the same Remington chokes on my Versa Max as a buddy had Casey at Tacord do for him on his Mossberg 590. And don't get me started on what a pain it was to source thinned walked chokes.

Long story short, when in doubt, I now always give Casey at TacOrd a call first.

Yes I xan confirm thst a 590 has enough meat to work with rem chok. Have done dozens of threm
 
Most of the newer 18 / 18.5 /20" Rem 870 barrels with the bead sight on base or rifle sights can be threaded for Remchokes. The older barrels with the bead screwed directly into the barrel are quite thin and require a thin wall choke if it is at all possible. The other fly in the ointment is that when these older barrels are threaded for choke tubes, the bead has little to hold it on. The bead can be moved back behind the choke tube but it looks a bit weird.

As Dennis has indicated, the definitive way to say what can be done is to have the barrel measured.
