Threading for chokes?

So I got to run a new to me shotgun last weekend in a 2 Gun event, a 2007 BPS Tactical 20”, and I must say it was without a doubt the smoothest operating pump gun ive ever run, the slide is like butter. The barrel is a cylinder bore, I would prefer it to have the ability to accept chokes and I’m pretty sure the barrel is thick enough to thread. I’m moving to Alberta soon, Camrose area and I’m wondering if there is anyone local to the Edmonton/ Red Deer/ Camrose area who does barrel threading? If not, I will ship it but ideally I would prefer local.
Thanks

Hopefully you find someone local (often best / easiest if viable) but if that doesn't work out I would give a strong recommendation to Tactical Ordnance (forum sponsor in Ontario).

They would always be my first point of contact for anything shotgun related (they have threaded chokes for me). First class work and very straight forward to deal with.

Thanks Sniffer, TacOrd was who I was thinking if I had to ship it somewhere, they have a great reputation 👍
Just hoping against hope that there was a local option 😊

The work itself is not difficult to do. It is just the giant tap that is required costs over $500.
Had no idea that was the case! Hard to find folks who will lay that out for a few shotguns a year. Most of the modern tactical models( not all) are threaded these days so I guess demand isn’t great 🤷‍♂️
I really enjoy this BPS, but we shoot a lot of Texas Stars and poppers etc at our 2Gun/3Gun events and the spread on a cylinder bore with target loads doesn’t knock them all down on the first shot if it’s at 15-20 yards, be nice to tighten it up a bit

The worst thing is that each choke system requires its own tap and not every gun or every shooter is gonna want the same pattern of choke. So that is at least $500 per choke system.

Any idea as to where they are available? The taps.

You will need both the reamer as well as the tap. You will also need an appropriate sized lathe to set the whole thing up in.

I did it once on a single Rem 870 barrel but apparently it can also be done on double barrels. Just take a bit different setup.

I thought it was a hand tap ordeal. Cut threads, done. I'm not set up with a lathe.

Do you want the threads to be straight and aligned with the bore? 🤷‍♂️

Taps don't self align with a hole very well.
Depends on the tap I suppose. I've cut countless threads by hand without a problem (bolts). Using a starter tap, then a bottoming tap to finnish if it's a blind hole that the fastener could conceivably need to sit all the way down into.

But, I hear you. That's a different application. There isn't (fill in the blank tonne psi) pushing material through a choke restriction at so many feet per second. While my fasteners have always tightened flush to the mating surface, any deviation on a choke tube could cause it to catch and hopefully just get blown out with the shot. If unfortunate, could cause a momentary blockage and boom! Mushroomed barrel.

Is that one of those new "Adjustable Chokes"? You squeeze it open or closed as required?

I always thought chokes constricted (got smaller) but seems not always.

I am thinking about a 590a1 for a do it all shotgun. I know it doesn't have a choke and can't take a choke, but would it be usable for hunting if I was able to thread a choke? Any disadvantages?

Hunting what?

The 590A1 is a very well built pump shotgun with a cylinder bore heavy walled barrel w/ ghost ring sights.

The cylinder bore lends itself very well to slugs, and buckshot out to 30 yards. This isn't a birdgun.

Some better range can be achieved for the buckshot loads with the use of flight control wads or Hornady's offerings.

If you can have just one...imho this would be it. The barrel can be machined for choke tubes which would turn it into a bird gun, but it's kinda heavy and overbuilt for that purpose. It could do it, but not well. Or, not as well as a designated skeet/trap/or turkey gun could.

If only it were that easy lol. This model was only made one year and the barrel is proprietary and not compatible with any other BPS barrel unfortunately.
Do they have a different receiver/frame or why wouldn't another barrel fit ?
