Threading for chokes?

Do they have a different receiver/frame or why wouldn't another barrel fit ?
Because they come with a factory extended magazine the barrel ring is in a totally different location than any other BPS barrels, quite a bit farther forward so the extended magazine tube is incompatible with the normal BPS barrels

Hunting what?

The 590A1 is a very well built pump shotgun with a cylinder bore heavy walled barrel w/ ghost ring sights.

The cylinder bore lends itself very well to slugs, and buckshot out to 30 yards. This isn't a birdgun.

Some better range can be achieved for the buckshot loads with the use of flight control wads or Hornady's offerings.

If you can have just one...imho this would be it. The barrel can be machined for choke tubes which would turn it into a bird gun, but it's kinda heavy and overbuilt for that purpose. It could do it, but not well. Or, not as well as a designated skeet/trap/or turkey gun could.

Thanks!

Would be my and only shotgun. Thinking about having it for mainly target shooting but maybe also turkey and deer. Maybe grouse too.

If I get it threaded, how would I protect the threads when I am not using a choke as it was originally intended?

If threaded, you install a cylinder "style" choke. That would resolve the issue.

The choke tubes (once threads are cut in the barrel) impart the various restriction. 3 tubes could provide, Full, Modified, Cylinder.

Slugs would most likely be run with either Mod or Cyl. and bird shot with either Mod or Full.

Another way you might consider going is with an older Remington Wingmaster (870). Plenty of Turkey killed with 2.75" shells. With the older Remingtons (also very well made), the whole barrel is changed as the choke is swaged into the barrel.

It's either one shotgun, pay to get the threads cut, then buy tubes. Or, buy the other shotgun, and buy used barrels to suit your game.
