I'd like to get the muzzle of a tikka rifle threaded so I can install a muzzle brake. I was quoted $400 by a gunsmith to do the work. He said he can do it without removing the barrel from the action. This sounds like a lot for what I have been told is a fairly easy job. Is $400 the going rate for this job?

It's a more difficult setup with the receiver attached but tikka barrels are a b1tch to remove. $400 seems high to me.

2 years ago when I was working - $100 would cover threading without removing the barrel. Bore centered in the lathe. If the barrel was shorter than18 inches I had to remove it. Usually the same $100 covered it. About a 20 to 30 minute job. I preferred to fit the brake at the time and bore the bullet clearance after threading all in one set up. ($125-$150)... I always felt the best accuracy and the most efficient brake performance was achieved that way compared to a brake with looser threads and a big hole that fits all.

Seems high to me. I just paid $100 cash to get one done on a Remington 700. I stripped the gun before dropping it off though. I pulled the stock, trigger, scope and bolt, mostly because I was changing a bunch of stuff.

I have a question for you dennis(if you don’t have me blocked on this forum too). If I were putting a break on a .257, would it be better to open up a 6mm brake, or just buy a 6.5mm and thread it on?
