In his book "Three against the wilderness" Eric Collier describes his use of a Ross 303 in his homesteading days in the Chilcotin in the 1920s and 30s.

The only picture I have seen is a romanticized drawing on the original cover with him depicted with a full-stock military model. In his book he says he carried it in a saddle scabbard, unlikely for a full length Ross. Does anyone know what his rifle looked like?

There's about 500 different models...need more info.

"There's about 500 different models"

That's why I'm asking. The later editions of the book have a handful of photos and that's all, none with the rifle. I'm wondering if anyone has seen more photos, or knew Veasy his son or has any other info.

"...unlikely for a full length Ross..." Not really. Cavalry of the time used the same rifle as the PBI and carried 'em in scabbards.

Was he using the 1910 military model with the 30.25" barrel...... or some other model?

My commercial .303 Ross is on a 1910 action and has a lightweight, 4-groove, 26-inch barrel with wide-groove Mauser-type rifling. It also has a sporting stock and would not be difficult at all to pack in a scabbard. Remember, standard length for an 1886 Winchester RIFLE was with a 26-inch barrel, and nobody thought that they were too long.... although they might have towed around a little set of wheels to rest the thing on.

Anybody seen "Joe Kidd"? Clint Eastwood takes out the Bad Guy at about half a mile, using a TAKEDOWN .280 Ross commercial rifle with a SCOPE SIGHT. That guy can really shoot, too: he's better with blanks than I am with live rounds!
