Three People in Norfolk, Ontario Fined. Deer Hunters.

Steep fines I dont think so. I know alot about one of them who was charged from someone i know and he always brags about how he gets turkey all year long and same goes for the deer.
Its about time they got caught.
Fines are fines and reasons for having them, so if you dont want to follow them then dont hunt.
Congras to the officer on this one!!

That is what I meant about the mitigating circumstances.....they probably have been watching him for a while, or have had complaints about them. For somebody to make an honest mistake, it would be steep!

I don't tag em till I get them dragged out to a cutline or loaded up on a quad.

I had a CO stop and check me out while I was gutting a deer, we chatted while I worked and he didn't say anything about tags. He only wanted to see the tag once I go the deer on the quad and had cleaned my hands with a bit of snow. but by then we needed a flash light to read the tags and pick out the correct one. :D

these guys sound like they were not near where they shot the deer (3 deer all transported together and not tagged) and they managed to talk themselves into a fine.

This was my thought as well.....fine seems pretty steep for what it was. I imagine there was some other mitigating circumstances!
I don't know. At this MNR web page, they sure pile on the fines for violations:

I have seen them get ruined after dragging a bull moose out of a swamp and up a hill.

Lesson learned,

Not saying its often, but it does happen and it would happen less with something more substantial.

Are you talking about the adheasive strips that fold back on themselves?
If they are applied properly, they are damn tough to get off, but whatever floats your boat.
As Joe stated, these folks are "special".

No question, there is more to this story than first appears.

As for the tag, it got caught during the drag and ripped completely off. Not sure when it happened, we did eventually find it mashed into the dirt.

Don't forget as well that validation tags on adult moose are simply a sticker that is placed on the license, this could easily come off with the license remaining. I just think there could be a better way,

I would like to see set fines for hunting violations. And its the crown that sets the fine on the CO's advice, don't ask how I know this ;)

I've never had a moose tag, are they the same as deer tags?
In Sask, we get three seals per "tag". One for the head, one for the hide and one for the body. Not sure how that works if you have to 1/4 and carry a deer out (hope I never have to find out either;)).

Lucky there are no conservation officers where we hunt. We would have lost countless boats, atv's, guns, first born, beer, and thousands upon thousands of dollars.

A CO asked me to see my hunting licence when I was in a logging landing 3 metres away from my bicycle with my wallet in my daypack in the carrier.

He gave me heck for not having my wallet on my person because by law I had to be prepared to cancel my tag immediately upon killing the game animal.

I understand why now, so I carry my wallet.

And for the second time, you are missing my point. I am not saying that using the tag is difficult, I am saying that they are stickers on a piece of paper. For something so important, something that can get us into such serious trouble, you would think they would make tags that could stand up to some of the abuse that can take place on a kill. Mud, water, snow, blood, sticks, leaves etc. can leave a tag pretty torn up or completely ruined. I'd like to not have to worry about my tag, when I am elbows deep in blood and up to my waist in mud. Will I keep using the tags? of course, I have no choice. But I guarantee you if they were made to withstand the perils of a hunt, the MNR would issue far fewer fines for this infraction and that is all part of the master plan.

Patrick

I guess your mud is muddier and your sticks stickier, and your snow....you get the point. Never had a problem with tags. And if you think your sad tale of inferior tags is worth spit in any court you can forget that too.

Ever lie to a CO?? Check that one out.

And I WANT the MNR issuing LOTS of violations to deserving axxwipes like these !

I dont know if they were being watched as they were caught driving the ATV down Turkey Point Road off in the ditch. That is the main area for the hunters who hunt the crown land park. Just about everyday during the shot gun hunt the CO's drive up and down the road there.
This past season I even seen one of the groups pushing the bush towards the road where one man was sitting on a pail with shotgun in hand on the shoulder of the road.
People like this scare me and I see why hunters get a bad rap. I think the more people get fined the more people will think about what they are doing.
I think any honest hunters and the show effort with obeying the rules will not be bothered.

The only time i don't tag deer is when I am poaching,I mean transporting,I mean Searching,I mean pooping yes pooping!!!

A few years back we hunted next to a group who shot two moose well off the beaten path. They taged both at the kill sight. By the time the moose were taken out to the road where they had truck access(a whole day) the tags were in very rough shape. When checked at camp two young C.Os charged them for re-using their tags(they did not).

They were in the peocess of seizing both moose, guns, ATVs, and one truck, and these hunters where getting pretty ugly,The two CO.s called back up. Luckily a seasoned CO came, and showed common sense, and reversed all charges when he realized where infact the moose had been shot. That, asking two guys from our group who helped retrieve the moose where the other COs did not. If another CO had not been available things could have went down, a whole lot different, and unfairly so!

Yep. Not quite sure why some people here seem to defend them.....

Not defending them!

There has to be more to this story. The people in question must have been known/wanted by the COs for a while, or had past charges. If this is the case $4650 wasn't high enough. If first timmers, too steep, and $1000 would have sufficed!

Without knowing the whole story it's hard to have an opinion either way.
