Anybody have any experience with Gentry Custom three position (winchester) safeties installed on remington rifles? I'm thinking of having one installed but I don't know if I need just the "safety" or the "safety&cocking piece"? How much machining is required? Do they turn out well? Any info would be great.

(please don't suggest buying a winchester.....all you funny guys)

Thanks

Brenden

An inexpensive alternative is an Ultra Light Arms Safety. Brownell's stock them. I have one on my 700 for a few years now. I like it. It appears to look just like the original 700 safety only to disengage the bolt lock you simply push down on the safety lever while it is still in the rear safety on mode. Down releases the bolt lock as well as when it is ahead in the fire mode.

Brenden are you thinking of the looks or practical aspect. I have just been looking at, more than likely less expensive one built by Pacific Tool and Gage. I e-mailed them yesterday answer sounded like that is all you need. I am no gunsmith though. Maybe one of the other guys can shed some light on this.

Are those safeties 'drop-in', Dennis? Sounds like a good option.....

Basically a drop in... I did not have any fitting to do with mine.

Just spoke with Melvin about his safeties. They are drop in only on 'vintage' M700s. He said they can be fitted to recent production rifles though.

Do you think it would take much 'doing'?

Thanks.

I don't know the manufacturer but I just installed a 3 position safety and shroud on a 700. Beautifully made but there was a lot of fiddling to drill the hole just right for the bolt lock and a considerable amount of work to grind the cocking piece just right. Probably about 2 hours. I would never own one myself. I don't understand what people like so much about a Model 70 safety.

The Pacific Tool unit is a very nicely made bolt shroud and safety which does require a substantial amount of fitting.
The safety and bolt lock are similar to that employed on the M70 but the bolt sleeve lock is somewhat different as it consists of a plunger and detent rather than being an actual "lock".
By the way, for those unfamiliar, the bolt sleeve lock serves to keep the bolt shroud from rotating when the safety lever is in the intermediate position and the bolt is open. In this position the nose of the cocking piece is lifted out of the notch in the rear of the bolt body so the whole works could rotate when the bolt was open. The lock or, in this case, the detent, prevents this.
Dennis,
Some people just like things for no good reason and others like them because they've had a bunch of gunwriters telling them for years that a given system was the ULTIMATE in rifle design. I put one on a mauser actioned rifle I use just so it would be the same as the half dozen model seventies I use. My thinking was that I would be less likely to screw up under pressure if all the rifles were similar. Sadly, regardless of the type of safety on the rifle, a klutz is still a klutz and likely to forget to flip the thing off before trying to shoot that really big bull! Regards, Bill.

I had a Gentry safety installed on a Rem 700 short action and am very satisfied with the function as well as the look. A small amount of work was required to fit. I only installed it because it was a custon rifle by KS Arms and i wanted it look different from all of the other 700s. My prferance is the Rem saftey.
