Does a .40 S&W normally eject casings dramatically further than a 9 mm or is it a question of the make of gun? I had my .40 BHP to the range today and it was easily throwing the brass twice as far as my 9mm Grand Power K100.

Depends on the gun in my experience. My Sig 220 in 45ACP throws brass far and fast. Yet the guy with a 45ACP next to me last time had the brass barely dropping out of the gun. And we were shooting the same factory ammo.

so many variables, i feel the caliber doesn't matter. my m&p.22 throws just as far as everything else i own.

only thing comes to mind is a worn out recoil spring making the .40 S&W eject further

It's strictly a gun to gun thing. Nothing to do with the caliber.

Although with an overly enthusiastic ejection I think I'd start to look at the idea of the next heavier recoil spring. A super strong ejection can be a symptom of a recoil spring being a little weak and allowing the slide to come back too fast. And that can lead to the slide battering the frame overly hard. A more or less "normal" ejection is when the brass is thrown anywhere from 3 feet out to around 6 feet out. If it's landing any farther away I'd buy the next stronger spring and try it. If it reduces the battering then it'll also smoothen up the felt recoil.
