When I was around 7 years old I used to go bug this old couple a couple doors down along the beach where we lived in a row of houses on the shore of Vancouver Island. Old -- Ha...They were probably in their 50s, ten years younger than I am now.
Their son and grandchildren lived a long ways away and they didn't seem to mind having me hang around.
I was already fascinated by firearms at the time and saw a very small rifle with no trigger in the usual place in their gun rack. The lady took it off the rack and her and I went out onto the gravel beach at low tide and she shot a crow with it, explaining that it had a thumb trigger. You just pushed a little sliding button on the pistol grip with your thumb to fire it. I can't remember if she let me shoot it or not.
Research indicates that it was called a Winchester Model 99, a variation on their 1902 rifle.
Have you ever seen one?
