Thureon Defense 9mm initial review/range review pg 2

Alright had a chance to bring the carbine to the range. Changed out the factory stock to a Magpul MOE commercial and fitted a Magpul AVG fore grip. I did this more to see if they would fit ok, the factory stock is fine. Didn’t have a real cheap optic for it so I fitted it with an Eotech off one of my AR’s. I’m sure any cheap red dot would be fine.

The gun was a pleasure to shoot. I shot at targets ranging from 25 yards, 50 yards to 100 yards with no problem hitting the target whatsoever. My buddy spotting for me was amazed that he could actually see the bullets hitting the targets at 100 yards. Groupings weren’t too bad and a lot of that was an optic that wasn’t dialed in entirely. This gun is pretty accurate.

Used a variety of ammo, ranging from Winchester to Wolf reloads to IVI SMG ammo. Fired about 300 rounds with no FTF or any other stoppages. The only problem I did have was the chamber was getting very dirty and I attributed that to the dirty IVI ammo I used. A little oil in the chamber fixed that. Mag was a little stiff to load at first, however easier over time. It is possible to jam more than 10 rounds in the mag, but the mag will not function in the gun.

I shot 10 rounds at 25 yards using the optic unsighted and I got this grouping on a birchwood casey target

I shot this at 50 yards figure 11 target.

This was at 100 yards

Trigger was pretty smooth, in the range of an AR and I believe these triggers can take a drop in kit if need be.

Short video of me shooting the rifle.

Post cleaning of the gun found that this gun gets dirty, however as most people do not shoot 300 rounds at a time or more it shouldn’t be that big of a problem.
The only really big problem I had was that I only had one mag, definitely recommend buying more than one mag for this gun. I imagine a UZI mag would be easy to modify for this gun.

Am I pleased with this gun? I have to say yes I am, I had tons of people come up to me on the range yesterday and they couldn’t believe it was non restricted and very AR like.

For a non restricted 9mm carbine with AR like qualities this is the gun for you. I highly recommend it and I probably will get one in .45.

I hate how all the guns I've been looking at are being released while I'm away D=

I'm torn between one of these or the JR Carbine. I don't mind the look but I really hate the fact the rail isn't continuous. Hopefully Arms East puts a price up soon I'm curious how that will compare to the JR.

Questar has a pile of the 9mm ar mags.......wouldn't they work? Price is still a mystery i guess.....armseast must be busy and no info on the website.

Thanks for the review Navy Gunner. Good to have you in town for a bit. Glad you like the TD9. And thanks for the comments. We're pretty excited to finally see these manufactured and available. The 9mm AR-feeling Carbine you can shoot CQB matches with AND take in the woods.

Want to talk top-rail please.

The carbine pictured, TD9RA, has the AR15 "Railed Gas Block" height front rail installed.
All the rails are modular and detachable, with 8 mounting planes on the forearm. 4 rails total are included, the top comes installed with the three other 'half height/half length' rails and screws included.

For those who shoot irons. We have addressed the issue of gas-block vs rail-height sight compatibility. Rather than put a long continuous rail completely along the top, we have commissioned a half-length, 'Rail Height' rail, to be mounted at the forward end. This allows for an AR15 'rail height' flip front sight, (rather than 'gas block' height) to be used in conjunction with a matching AR15 rear sight.

A full continuous rail can be done (and if customers request them, we can probably provide), but I do think it would add weight with dubious gain on a 9mm carbine.
We suspect most people will slap a red dot on these and be off to the races.

With collapsable stock, price is in the high $8XX for the standard hand guard TD9A, and high $9XX for the multi-rail TD9RA models.

Integrated emergency sights are a factory installed $65 option. (TD9RSA, TD9SA)

I think the quality of these Thereon Defense carbines will speak for themselves. Not to mention, non-restricted, AR15 feel and ergonomics, and 10 round pistol mag availability, and SMG-type top loading mags at that. These are fine firearms.

We were holding off putting these on the sight until existing queries are handled.
These have been a LONG time coming.

Thats about the ugliest thing I have ever seen?

The handguard is too thin IMO. With that rail on it it is just terrible.

Any reason to buy this over the JR carbine? I think it looks tons better.

9mm AR mags?

And obviously price is gonna play a big role.

Are you hereby recanting your original Kel-Tec comments ?....:nest:....:p

How does it strip? That <edit>

Two pins separate upper/lower, similar to field stripping an AR15. Bolt lifts out from the bottom of upper like Uzi bolt lifts out of top. If you can field strip an Uzi, you can field strip a TD9.

For CDN 9mm SMG fans. This is the one you've been waiting for.

I'll start a proper thread in the business section, as per CGN decorum, but I have to say, you all should see the 9mm TD Pistols. Hot dang. Wish we had an FRT. Soon! 9" Bbl. Hot.

Does it require a buffer and spring in the stock to work?
Yes.

If I can add... for anyone wondering how Navy Gunner managed to get his mits on the first one, yes he's been on the list, but, he's also home on leave when we got them registered, and we literally couldn't get him out of the shop until he had one.

Being an open minded, progressive shop, we do welcome customers of the Naval and Air varieties (with a small surcharge).

I honestly don't know why people insist on designing firearms with AR buffers. The Marlin Camp is small and contains all the parts. Now if that stock can be made to fold, wow!
