thureon defense vs JR carbine

Back when I bought my Thureon both were very new and no local shops carried either of them.

I made my decision by researching and reading reviews. In the end, I chose the Thureon based on construction. I was super impressed with how they are made (machined from billet aluminium). I even picked the Thureon despite the custom magazines it required (back then).

I have since had the opportunity to play with a JR and I can say %100 I made the right choice for me. To put it simply the JR feels like a toy compared to the Thureon.

If you are looking for a lifetime gun, then the Thureon is it. Every aspect of the gun screams quality. The only downside (for some) is the looks. Some people think its ugly compared to the JR. Personally I love the look of it. Its very utilitarian, kinda like an A10 warthog.

Maybe this will help.. Make sure to browse to page 5. I included a bunch of take-down pics..

I love my JR but honestly, if I was going to be shooting a pcc a lot, I'd go with the Thureon...taking the stock off to clean the bolt is a pita but I don't shoot it enough for that to be more than an occasional annoyance.

so if you where going to get one what would you get and why?

in 9 mm
I have owned both the JR carbine and the thureon defense in 9mil.( both take block mags)
I could not justify keeping the two of them because they are both very similar.
I kept the thereon and sold the JR to a friend , because IMHO it was the better rifle of the 2.
I really liked my JR carbine , but IMHO the T/D is a much better designed firearm.
I would encourage anyone that is looking for a pistol caliber carbine to try and check out the Thureon before you put you money down on a JR carbine.

I got the chance to half break in (200 rounds) through a TD this weekend in 9mm.
we were using western munitions "remfg" 115 gr 9mm rounds - no failures, no stoppages, no fte, no ftf. shot pretty tight (25,35,50) after we got the ml3 dialed in.

I need one. At this time I don't own one, so these are my thoughts

light (6.2lbs), easy to point, ugly yet beautiful in a spartan and functioning way.

pros : easy takedown, optics height (yes that ugly riser works great) ar compatibility.
cons : trigger was a bit gritty and at times wouldn't fully reset, no bolt hold open, hand guard (round one, no rails - hence, needs rails)

meh: mag release is a bit of a stretch, nylon/hard plastic safety, goofy way to release bolt - pull handle out, then let fly home. (i) hate a2 grips

yes, you can use ar handguards on the JR- don't buy on just that. The no tool stripping process of the TD is enough alone to make me buy one.

Has anyone upgraded the trigger? where can a fella find one of these things? (td rifle that is)

I have never handled or even seen the TD in person, but I do own the 9mm JR and I like it a lot. I think (just looking at pics) that its a much nicer looking rifle. Also, I have the proper spanner wrench for tear down, I dont find it to be difficult at all, hell i take mine apart on my lap while I'm watching TV.

As for feeling like a toy, not at all, its a good heavy solid gun, I think the only plastic part on it is the adjustable stock.

I own a JRC in 9mm. I picked it over the TD because it looked a lot better in my opinion and the availability was better when I bought mine. Why are people so worried about the take down? I'm getting close to 2000 rounds threw my JRC and I see no reason to clean it. It is easy to take down anyways. Unlock the castle nut then spin off the stock. Then undo the bolt handle and your done. The bolt slips right out. I've never had any malfunction with 9mm mags. Using .40 mags I had one hang up when I pushed a loaded mag in on a closed bolt then racked the bolt, it had a failure to feed.

All in all it seems to be a great rifle. I used it for 3gun once this summer and it worked great. Next summer it isn't going to be out as much because I bought a AR.

Interesting thread. I'm interested in the TD but only because the JRC had so many problems to begin with while the TC had none that i can find out about. Chitty sight radius but other than that no big deal. Carry on chaps, carry on!

The newer production have the add on rails. Much better.

To clarify, Arms East's guns include the rails, don't know about Elwood Epps. Interestingly, on the Epps website it states theirs have fixed M4 stocks. I would guess this means pinned like the JR Carbine. Arms East had collapsible ones. Can anyone confirm the details for the Epps version? The price is better, but if it doesn't have the rail kit then IIRC it's about the same price Arms East had prior to the rail kit being available.

The take down for TD is like an Ar15....alot easier. You dont need any tools?

true, no tools needed.
there are two pins (which I though were a little TOO easy to pull out) but there none the less.

the riser on the TD brings the sights, like what Arms East said in another thread VERY close to an AR height.

I found the Eotech to feel very similar to XCR and AR's and my low mount aimpoint to be just a little to low, which matches my thoughts in regards to it being on other flat top rifles.

the collapsible stock on the TD I tried (from reliable) was pinned.

That pic got me to half chub. Thanks Vimy.

Guess i'll bring this thread back to life. Anyone that has any knowledge on this subect. Please post. I don't wanna spend 900+tax$+xtra mags+ ammo without damn good info on these guns. They're just too expensive to risk being a lemon. Anyone?

my jr in 9mm runs flawless , 5000+ rounds ever let a few friends put a 1000rounds down range in a day, and a lot of rapid fire with no problems, it is the round barrel not the triangle mossberg barrel in the early modles. very fun gun
adam
ps its no harder to clean than my mossberg shot gun
