Thursday with the twins at the Mission range

Nope, I was wrong. My NEAR mount doesn't have a fully supported base along the rail.

But it does have the MRDS cap. ;)

WP, when did Near start making One piece ring mounts?
The CF mount on the 10's is not nearly as nice as, $3,200 optic in a $45 mount...

Not sure. When I was looking for a mount this summer/fall, I was told to give him a call. So after talking with Richard and looking at a few pics of some of his stuff that was in use in Afghanistan, I went with his Alphamount.

It's an awesome piece of kit, rock solid, and fits/looks great.

KevinB:

Near has been making his Alpha mount for some time now, However its use on an AR is a new one on me. Most of the time, those mounts end up being used on precision bolt action rifles like this Rem 700 in ACIS chassi with a 29" Krieger

I know its tough to tell, but thats an Alpah mount holding that optic in place.

I have heard a lot of good things about them

PM incoming!! :D

That Alpha mount looks pretty good.

One correction to this original thread. I did in fact later on load up some ammo. I loaded up some 175 SMK for the RFB. The RFB didn't like it, so I gave them to Fireball to put through his AR10. Well if there wasn't the one flier it would have been one heck of a group. 4 were in one tiny hole. The one shot opened it up but still it was very promising.

I've added another AR308 to the collection a number of months ago. I bought a LMT MWS with the 20" SS 1:11.25 5R barrel.

This was the picture form when I bought it. After receiving the rifle I quickly changed out the 16" CL barrel for the 20". The barrel is black with a flash hider. It looks just like the picture only longer. It was one of those rare deals I couldn't pass up.

A little thread revival!

Something interesting today. I pulled out my recently built Armalite SASS AR10B rifle and the LMT MWS. I took a closer look and the cutout shape for the LMT upper/Lower is the exact same shape as the AR10. Well I figured what the heck and separated both uppers and lowers.

The LMT upper fit the AR10 lower perfectly. It looked good too. So I grab an Armalite Gen2 mag (M14 based) along with a snap cap. Hold open worked, bolt release worked and the round chambered perfectly. It extracted properly too. Warning I don't recommend this as there may be other issues such as bolt shape etc which could cause issues. Do so at your own risk!!!

Now the AR10 upper wouldn't fit on the LMT lower. It appeared the LMT take down pins were just a touch too big to go through the holes for the upper.

Just thought I'd mention this as it was extremely interesting.

Also of note was trying one of my DPMS mags in my LMT. Same mag pattern (original Armalite waffle pattern, often referred to as SR25 or DPMS pattern). The mag was too tight. You would have to force it and it definately wouldn't drop free. I know most with LMT or KAC rifles are probably using KAC mags (comes with both) or more likely pmags. But I thought this should be mentioned. The DPMS mag was an older one so I don't know if there have been changes since. Also Wolverine has 10 round mags in the making for this pattern.

Thread revival due to this https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1863937-Original-Canadian-military-Armalite-AR-10

It looks legit to me.

I have two of these rifles and have owned three.

There were 6 prototype rifles from Wolverine supplies plus one extra they had made up. They were shot 200 times for evaluation. Wolverine sold those prototype rifles with new lowers. After successfully testing those rifles A total of 18 I believe were were ordered and sent to the Canadian military in 2004.

After which we have what I refer to as the “bring back” uppers. The military uppers were sent in for refurbished and were simply replaced with new ones. The used uppers were then sold with new lowers. These had an unknown round count. Often had brown and or camo paint on them. Rattle canned. This however was short lived as the Military found out and stopped the sales of their old uppers. ( Wolverine would need to verify this)

These rifles consist of an upper with a shell deflector and no forward assist along with a badger ordnance stabilizer handguard. The barrel is a 24” Walther lothar 1:11.25 twist rate triple lapped and ceramic coated (probably some type of cerecote).

These are AR10B models and use the gen 1 m14 modified mags or the much better gen 2 specific mags from 2006 and on. Not dpms, sr25 Omaha compatible. The lowers have two stage triggers. The A2 stock has an accuracy speaks adjustable butt plate. The backup sights were GG&G wih tridium inserts which were part of the Military package but not included for civi sale. Same with S&B scope, suppressor, Harris bipod etc.

I kept my sale receipt which is pretty much the only way to confirm a prototype vs bring back. Plus you have to make sure it’s not a clone. The real ones have a non standard thread for the suppressor. Plus you can see a ring from the suppressor on the barrel.

What the Canadian military used later on is likely different. These rifles with that handguard and long barrel are very heavy. Awesome for target shooting but heavy to lug around. I sourced a so called Canadian military over run barrel which is identical including the odd ball threading but it is 20” not 24”. I used this for my super SASS build. I would believe the Military would ditch the heavy handguard as well. So likely later in use rifles look different. These however are Afghanistan circa 2004 rifles.

Oh and they shoot like you wouldn’t believe.
