Ticks, and what to do if you have the bad fortune of being born Canadian...

You cannot import ready to use bottle of permethrin but can order the farmer undiluted version, which ironically costs less .. our laws are so stupid.. anyway I think I got it on amazon without issue (1 gal). Should last a while !
 
Nothing but layers of clothing. Pulled about 5 off me, and found more on my friends on the weekend. Where I'm hunting, ticks seem to be everywhere. Not just a single species, plenty of the ones we find can carry Lyme disease. So I layer up and tuck in everything. When I get home I will take all my clothing and put them in garbage bags. Then take a shower check everywhere, and take a comb through my hair. So far it seems to have worked but I have no delusions that this will work for ever. With the amount I had on me this weekend and the amount we are seeing in the leaf litter, I am bound to actually get bit and not just have them latch onto clothing. I'm not really sold on putting down pesticides. Though I have been thinking of building blinds just off the ground to help mitigate the contact. Even a body suite I think could help if you need to be around where there are high concentrations. Maybe use it as an under layer to keep heat in, and ticks out.
 
So the stronger version of permethrin for livestock is available in Canada while the milder on for humans isn't. It's available in the USA? Sounds about right in how Canada makes its laws.
 
There is an aerosol called kombat that is an insect spray sold st home depot. It has worked very well for me and .y family who work and play in areas with lots of ticks. It also doesnt smell near as bad as other bug sprays. Works great for skeeters too.

Doesn't work worth a damn on horses, why would it do better on humans? :confused: Also consider, it's an insecticide and your hide is a lot thinner than Dobbin"s . :)

Permethrin and pyrethrin are meant to be applied to clothing NOT SKIN. Once dry it posses no issues for skin contact. It does nothing to deter insects, but kills them once they come in contact with it

I’d be hesitant to use most livestock based versions, even if letting them dry on clothes. I hunt/hike in rainy weather some times, or dewy ground while mushroom picking. I’m sure it’ll get wet and soak through, I’ve looked at the active ingredient lists on those products and I’ll pass.

No it won't. that is why they say you can was your clothing 5-8 times before it wears off. The livestock permethrin is no different that that for humans. The other ingredient, Piperonyl butoxide, is considered low to non toxic except for fish.

None of the fly sprays I’ve looked at say it’s safe for humans, give clear instruction on removing it from skin etc etc. Not to mention they specifically say to wash clothes that come in contact with it right away, so I’ll pass on it.

Point in fact I have been splashed the odd time with Ivomec when treating cows. Seems to work too. No tapeworms or lice for me. As far as the permethrin i never recommend putting it on your skin that would be ineffective. Deet works better for that. But permethrin properly diluted lightly sprayed on boots and cuffs of coveralls is quite effective on ticks.
 
In Ontario TSC sells Boss POUR ON that is 5% permethrin in 900 mL bottles for $70. If you mix it down to 0.5% you get 9L. I put it in a spray bottle and soak my outer layer clothing and let it dry. I just did my camo for turkey season, will let you know how it works

One more comment on Sawyer Permethrin is that is is virtually odorless. The area spray products do however have an objectionable smell, at least to me.
