TICKS - Ontario

What damage does Lyme disease do mostly ?

All kinds of nasty stuff that is not readily attributed to LD...at least in Canada, where the docs are not well versed in it. Perhaps a severe case, my partner died from the effects of LD. He was in an extreme amout of pain for a long time. Very sad. Had he been in the US, I feel he would have received better treatment, or at least a proper diagnosis much earlier in the game.

Yes, hunt in 67.

Spring Turkey was horrible for ticks - pick four or five off each outing.

Seemed to die back a bit by late summer, but still was getting a tick every second or third time out.

Then again during the gun hunt/deer - was warm the first week and picked up a tick (small enough that looked like a recent hatch).

Usually get the odd one here and there in an average year, this year was pretty bad...

where in 67? I am there too, I agree they are horrid. Pull at least 5 out each year.

3rd vote for the permethrin,I live in a tick infested area.so many that everytime I head into the bush I would have a dozen or so on me.Started using permethrin and I don't see them anymore.Treat my hunting clothes with it once and I'm good for the season.I use Sawyer brand.

I live up in WMU 84 and my son got one playing around in leaves at the start of October. Publichealth sent it away and said they would call if it was positive for Lyme.
A friend got one in the shotgun season down in Mount Forest (North Border of WMU 80).

Never have i heard of them around here till this year.

Our camp is between Madoc and Bancroft and we pulled more than 30 ticks off of one of our hounds the first week of the hunt. Hunters didn't have any though nor the other two dogs. The dog we pulled all of the ticks off was lost for the day so covered some territory.

Yes ,there are a lot in the 64A area, two crawling around on me during hunt and friend had one latched into his belt line on the weekend after cutting deer up.Spring summer fall you have to check yourself and your pets.

Here in south central Ontario, Trenton area, there are plenty of the black legged ticks, the ones that carry lyme disease. I had my first one 3 years ago, buried in my chest, I Googled how to remove it properly, removed it and placed it in alcohol. I took it to the Health Unit, they sent it for testing and it came back negative for Lyme disease. It sure made me aware of the problem, since then I have had one on my neck and my daughter has had 2 on her. The thing that I am finding odd it that ticks are supposed to live in the grass, but I believe that they are also higher in the brush and trees, both ticks I had were near neck level and I was brushing through the woods. The two my daughter had were also near her neck. Check yourself often, Lyme disease is nasty

We have lots of ticks here in the North West, Dryden, Kenora, Fort Francis area. Always plucking them off in the spring to early summer. By mid to late July you never see one again until next year. Never seen a Deer Tick yet, all Wood Ticks.

I have a very light coloured lab who only picks up a couple ticks per season. The black dog however can get a good half doz. on her a day in peak tick season. Colour seems to be a factor in attraction.

I had ticks on me first week of Nov hunt down here. It warmed up to 20 and they were out.

K9 advantix works wonders on the dogs. Never seen one on my dog all summer or fall after initial application.

I never saw a tick in Ontario, and I lived there until only a couple of years ago. Here in Manitoba, they are everywhere. A day spent outside in May or June would always end with a tick inspection session that yielded several hitchhikers, both on me and my dog. They tend to crawl around on you for at least a few hours before settling down for a meal, so you can easily pick one up in short grass and find it on your neck shortly thereafter. I've removed many dozens from myself over the past couple of years, and only two had actually begun to bite...they hadn't swollen up into disgusting blood-filled grapes yet.

We now use a treatment for the dogs that seems to work well (got it from the vet), and even when we find one on a dog now it is usually dead. Permethrin on outdoor clothing works well, but you can't spray everything you wear with the stuff...at the height of the season we can pick up ticks from a mowed lawn around here. If I'm just around the house, in the yard, I'll wear shorts and you can usually feel them if they grab on and start crawling.

The best answer for me is a tip I got from a PH in Africa, where ticks are rampant: Flea and Tick Shampoo, sold for dogs! If I suspect I am especially likely to have a few, maybe after time spent in tall grass, etc., I just take a shower with this stuff, taking care to keep it away from face/mouth/eyes. I scrub down with it, rinse, then re-wash with ordinary soap. I've seen several dead or dying ticks rinsed off me in the shower this way. Still check myself carefully afterwards, but it's always nicer not to find any! :)

Disclaimer: Yes, I know it's not meant for human use. Yes, I'm sure if I drink a few bottles of it I will regret it. Yes, I probably should wait until it's been tested for a few decades and has government approval. If you want to live forever, you probably shouldn't use it.
