Ticks.....

google 'tick twister' the ONLY way to instantly and safely remove ticks, Ive used it on my self and dogs. They are about $3

We've always just used our fingers. Get as close to the head as possible and pull slowly. Or fast depending on the situation. 99% of the time the head will take a part of you instead of you having a head inside.

I remember a bear that we were skinning out shot in the Ashern area of MB. We had to blast the bear with raid and wrap it in plastic for about an ahour before we even started. The ticks where like grapes handing from the armpits and ears. Skinning the paws out was the worst. You could just feel them stampede up your arm.

Awful.

I've thrown a tick infested bear hide in the freezer figuring it would kill them. Soon as that hide thawed they were crawling again. When we go morel picking in the spring I like to wear white painters coveralls, at least that way you can see the little b@*tards. Soon as I get the first one crawling on me in the bear stand I've got the "heebies" for the rest of the night. I'd rather put up with the skitters than ticks!

No $hit. Whats worse is that once you have extracted them, you have to break them in half, burn both separately, bury the remains in opposite ends of your property - all the time chanting "Klaatu barada nikto". :runaway:

The freak the hell or me. Give me a skitt'r anytime!

Where do you pick morels?

I read that they like moist areas. I used to avoid those in the spring. But now, like mentioned before, i pick them up everywhere.

Its getting to the point where you can get them at the farm without even getting out of your truck!!!!

I was thinkin of going bear hunting for the first time in the next cpl weeks, and all anyone told me about was skitters and black flies, no one mentioned these dam things. I wonder if the woods I hunt in have as many as what you guys are seeing? Anyone bear hunt off the Island of MTL in the Townships???

Where do you pick morels?

Poplar bush mostly. morels tend to like the lower lying areas that hold moisture and don't dry out as quickly. Hazelnut brush helps as well, but also holds scads of ticks. If you've never picked before make sure you have someone properly identify them for you as there is a False Morel which is poisonous. PM me if you want more info.

When people refer to ticks liking warm, moist areas, they were referring to where ticks like to place themselves on human bodies!
They did not mean that ticks like moist areas in the bush. In BC there are more in the dry belt areas than anywhaere else.

Here is a good tick story a guy I work with has a dog and wife. One night a tick filled up on his dog and droped off on the kitchen floor. His wife got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and steped on it barefoot. He clamed she became a little upset. I have had more than a few ticks on me. Try to stay out of the long grass and brush. That seams to be where they are the thickest. My super effective tick removal method is to dig them out with my jacknife. Just push the point under thier head and pull them out like a splinter. I try to find them before they attach.

where in canada???

Never seen one in NE alberta.
Or as a kid playing around lake ontario, bancroft, muskokas.

Our tax dollars must result in a map of where they are and are not.

ok guys , the stuff talked about on another thread or this thread , is sold at princess auto there are 2 brands one is called horse gard and the other is called kentucky fly shield .
both products have pyrethrins in them and are good for flies(black flies too ) and ticks , amongst other pests. Spray your clothing , NOT yourself , hats are sprayed as well. This stuff lasts through 7 washings and sells for 39$ per imp gallon or 6$ a litre, and is well worth the price !!! KILLS ticks etc... ON CONTACT!!!!

Doing fieldwork in southern NS we would get ticks every day. I could get out of the truck, walk to the tailgate and have 5-10 on my pants already! Every night was 'tick check' time. Get naked and climb up on the hotel vanity to use the mirror to see those 'hard to reach' spots. The only thing more scarring than that view was the days you would have to do removals using the same technique...... :runaway:
I'm now at the point where ticks are a total whatever to me.

Like I said the ticks have only been a real problem for about the last 10 years or so. When I was a kid I spent more time in the fields around the house then actually in the house. No ticks back then either.
