Don't use alcohol or any other chemicals for removal.

Pull them out by the head. As soon as you put ANYTHING on them they regurgitate all the blood and bacteria back into their victim.

If the tick has Lyme, then all you are doing is INJECTING everything back in.

Advantix is a combination of 2 chemicals, imidacloprid and permethrin. Both are easily obtainable for consumer use in the US but not available in Canada without a license.

Permethrin is is sold in Princess Auto, as insect spray (mentioned earlier in this thread) and Imidocloprid is available in the US in Home Depot etc as Advantage or Merit and used for grubs etc. It is a very safe insecticide, similar to Nicotine.

Going into tick infested areas? Mix up a dilute solution and give your cloths/dog a light spray.

Permethrin is what cloths are soaked in that lasts for up to 6 washings. Imidocloprid is not as "tenacious"

Wow, I've never seen a single tick every time I've gone out into the bush... it's always been mosquitos.

LOTS of mosquitos.

Course I always spray down my clothes with deep off or something similar and I got a bottle of this DEET cream (I can't remember the exact name right ATM) that's retardedly effective. That might have something to do with most bugs leaving me alone. :D
 
I had a lot of ticks when treeplanting north of Thunder Bay. Depending on the weather, and the amount of grass in a block we were planting, I would walk away at the end of the day with anywhere from 10 - 200+ on me.

Since they usually tend to drop onto your pants and boots from lower grass, I found it generally worked well to apply a good layer of deet-containing bugspray around the ankles of my pants, as well as around the ankle of my workboots to discourage them from coming up from my boots. A layer around just underneath the belt prevents them from migrating north.

Now, I don't mean to suggest that these methods were extremely effective... but I think they stopped about half the ticks, which, with nowhere to go, would be milling about in confusion on my pants.

I remember once stopping to relieve myself. I pulled out the 'bits & pieces', and had a tick 'down there'. Luckily, he was still a 'cruiser' and not a 'biter' yet.

As far as removal, it always worked to pinch them behind the head with your nails, and pull them out. Don't jerk, or you will likely leave the head behind. If you do leave the head in, just insert the tip of your knife into the skin under the head, and 'pop' it out.

When you do it enough times, you get pretty good at it.

I had a wood tick in the house last week, but non on me or the dog.
Is lyme disease limited to deer ticks?
 
The last three years in Sask the Ticks have gotten progressively worse. I talked to some of the old-timers and they said they had never seen ticks in this area and now there everywhere. Strange but this how it works with insects, perfect conditions and some luck and you have a problem on your hands.
