tight .308 barrels?

Thanks for straightening out Johnnies performance, he deserves proper credit. He is 80 and stlll shoots as much as possible and has helped many new and experienced TR guys.

lejarretnoir, Bill Wylde, the original proponent and developer of the .223 Rem for longrange, was sponsored by us, but haven't heard from him for ages. We have some original rail gun tests on the GB491, but there isn't any groove comparison in that venture.

Certainly one of the guys to pay attention to!

Just to throw in another variable to this conversation, comparisons should not be made apples to oranges. For example, Berger bullets can measure .2975 to .3087 depanding on how worn their die is when that batch is made. When I questioned Berger why a batch of bullets would not fit in a throat of .0005 over bullet dia. Eric Stecker confirmed this was their limits. I have measured many comp. bullets and the one most consistent in dia. to specs was Sierra bullets. To know you have to measure with a 10 thou mike.
The only companys that have to conform to SAAMI specs. are Firearms mfg. The custom barrel maker can make a barrel any dia. he wants. The most consistent makers of correct dia. are all cut rifled barrels. Krieger is exceptional at this as are some others. Buttoned and lapped barrels are mostly over size. As they are lapped after they are buttoned until they are happy with the finish, I have seen some .0015 oversize at .3095. Unfortunately, you have to measure with precision ball gauges and a 10 thou mike to know. I think you can see where I am going here. You could have a .3075 bullet in a .3095 barrel or a .3075 barrel with a .3087 bullet and that is without going to a tight barrel. Makes it very hard to compare without knowing precise barrel and bullet dia.
Maybe that is part of the fun of this game we play.

Mick:

Interesting input. Lapua makes to CIP, the EUR equivalent, as Finland is signatory, as are most EUR manufacturers.

Agree that Krieger makes exceptionally close to spec barrels, as does Bartlein, with the latter using newer technology and having apprenticed at Krieger and they all learned from Boots Obermeyer.

Agree with Mr. McPhee that it's hard to compare and I 'm sure it's the case that tighter barrels may work better with some makes and also vary lot to lot.

Just spoke with arguably Canada's top FClass shooter, Gord Ogg, and he uses Bartlein standard barrels with Lapua GB491 and incidently, states that Lapua bullets are the most consistent of any make. He uses a Juenke to measure jacket concentricity and has even had a lab measure a variety of makes.

More importantly, Gord has had a very hard time due to complications with knee surgery. Never met the man, but deal with him and know of his passson for excellence and sportsmanhip in sharing his considerable knowledlge on and off range. I' sure those that know him wish the best!

Peter
