Whew are they ever a hard shove! Compared to the TC Maxi ball (which pretty much falls all the way to the charge), the Hornady Great Plains 410 gr. require a hard shove with a ball starter and then 2-3 really firm raps to seat. Is this normal? They come prelubed, but I'm wondering if anyone here uses a little extra lube with them. I'm shooting them in a Lyman Trade Rifle.
 
Maxi Balls should start hard, to get the top ring in the bore, but should slide down easy from there. After ten or twelve rounds at the range, whichever hand you're using to beat the short starter with, may feel like every bone is broken.

I shoot those. They are great conicals but they are damned hard to get into the barrel. I tried putting some "Bore Butter" on them without success. The hardest part is knowing when they are seated without bashing the devil out of them which will deform them and cause erratic accuracy. I have marked my ramrod so I know when they are down. I don't like any lubed wads underneath as that is not the way they were intended to be loaded and the longer you leave the lubed patch or wad in contact with the powder the more the powder gets affected by them. I also carry a wooden mallet for starting the bullet. The Great Plains is a great bullet from a great company and shoots accurately and is deadly. Best of luck. Our B/P season opens tomorrow here. Thank you for the advice. This is a great place for a BP neophyte to get some help. Good luck on your BP hunting. We are all done out here in Alberta. 10 months to go. I'll be spending some time at the range.
