Hit the gravel pit with my buddy yesterday and fired off a hundred or so rounds. His Tika T3 in 300WSM fails to load the last round (number 3) every time. If he has two or three in the mag it loads fine but doesn't load the last round. I'm thinking its the cheap plastic mag that comes with the Tika. Am I right? Is ther a steel mag avail for them?

Its a nice gun but for what he paid for it it shouldn't have those problems.
 
Sounds like either the follower is hanging up, or the spring tension is a bit low. If the follower is hanging up, a few seconds with a nail file to smooth up the point where it's hanging should do it (probably a casting burr if I had to guess). If the spring doesn't have enough spring -- that should be replaced under warranty, if it's a new gun.

And this is an unsuaul problem -- I've owned half a dozen Tikka mag's, and never had a single malfunction out of any of them, ever.
 
My 22-250 has done this to me. It seems if you push the front of the follower down to far while loading the mag something binds up. Push the back of the follower all the way down and let the front stay near the top of the mag. You should hear a faint snap. Then it usualy works good after that.
 
Did your buddy tried to remove the follower (and successed?)?

This can happen if the spring is mounted backwards, or if it's not sitting within the dowels (plastic pins) inside, on the the magazine floor.

As for cheap plastic, I shot quite a lot with one of mine and it never failed to load.
 
Tell your buddy to read his manual, it tells you how to disasemble the mag and clean it. I have had the same problem with mine , but once I cleaned it and you really have to look hard in there, it has never done it again. If it still does it , get a new mag, they are not to unreasonable at Wholesale or Russlle's in Calgary.
 
Exactly right Cole...and I for one would like to say something about the Tikkas and the 'cheap plastic' comments I hear all the time...it will last a 100 times longer then your metal and wood rifle, and composite injection molded materials, while 'plastic' are not the same thing as your kids sand bucket for the beach. The elements do not affect the materials like humidity, high amounts of moisture, etc cause the stock to swell, and they maintain zero unlike any other. I own two Tikka T3s, and have beat the living #### out of them, and guess what...they will still outshoot any factory rifle I have ever owned, or my friends have ever owned.

Preach it, brother! My stainless 308 Tikka T3 Lite with neck sized brass and a fairly generic load of Varget and 150 AccuBonds will put bullets into groups that would make most benchrest shooters fairly happy (when I've got it together on the bench, I can put the bullet holes touching at 250 yards - sweet!!). I didn't even know I was capable of shooting like that till I got this rifle. It also makes a great "climbing stick" when trapsing up and down the mountains looking for mulies. :)
 
It's trendy to bash the mags and call them plastic....

I've never had a moments trouble so far with any of my mags (6 of them, .300wm or .270win).

I've had some minor troubles with metal mags though... my .223 CZ mags crease the casings, and my m14 mags didn't feed all the time.
So I've had more problems with metal mags than "plastic" ones in my experience.


It's all about perspective.
 
My Tikka T3 in 300 WSM shoots just fine btw. I'd take it back if he just got it. Might be able to get another mag from the dealer or rep if the rifle is still new. Probably a follower floor plate or spring tension issue. Don't give up on the rifle - mine's a tack driver! :rockOn:
 
stupid Q? will it chamber 1 if mag put in with 1 round.
may be another issue with extracted shell hitting last one in mag

and who shoots paper with a full mag? let barrel cool, load 1 at a time.
its not a mauser
 
if you clean it and you still have the problem call tikka or send them an email im sure they will send you a new mag yes you will have to buy a new one well you wait but tikka is a good name and they are easy to deal with
