Hi guys, well im busy working up some loads for my Tikka, 260 Remington. Lapua Brass, WLR primer, IMR 4831 and H4831SC loaded from about 3.5gr below max and increased in .5gr incriments all the way to max. COAL on all bullets 2.775. 120Gr Hornady GMX. Now my gun has a looooong throat max cartridge length to touch the lands is 2.978 with the GMX(measured with the sinclaire OAL length guage). my max magazine length in the Tikka Clip is 2.835,,,, So my usual way to work up a load is like stated above, start about mid way between max and minimum and work my to max, them adjust COAL until she tightens right up, but the results with these two powder and bullet combonations are so horrible I kinda think Id be wasting my "precious" powder supply!! anyways groups are 3-4 inches for all 10-12 powder/bullet combonations. anyways I was wondering if anybody shoots the 120 GMX and what powder/Primer/ how far off the lands ect... recipe they use.
Thanks Fellas

Tikka T3 Hunter 260 Rem.
Both loads with CCI std. primers
120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip 45.5 gr H 4350 =2890 fps and 1/2" at 100 oal 2.80"
125 gr Nosler Partition 43.0 gr IMR 4350 =2820 fps and 3/8" at 100 oal 2.80"
If I push for more velocity the groups open up
I always start at min. powder loads and work my way up. I have found many times best accuracy does not equate to best velocity and vice versa.

125 Partition, 43.5 grains of W760 in Winchester brass, fired by a WLR primer. 2.80 COL in a 700 Remington

2890 fps and sub-moa when I do my part. Brass life is excellent, Just a great deer load.

Have not tried the GMX yet in this rifle. I will report on that bullet later.

Regards, Dave.

I think 4831 might be too slow for the bullets you are using- works better with the 140gr bullets tho, so don't get rid of it!!!
- I would suggest, as above, H4350 or H414/760.
I have tried the 120gr GMX and 129gr Interbonds and couldn't get either to shoot. I ditched those bullets in favour of 130 Accubonds and 130 Gamekings for hunting and never looked back
Ahhh yes - the Tikka long throat.... don't think about it, just load to mag length or book length and go shoot!

The Partitions were my first choice, but I cant find any in the places I usually buy reloading stuff. I'm trying to build a load my daughter can shoot an Elk with, so in Leiu of the Partition I thought Id try the GMX. I've got some Nosler Ballistic tips but I dont think they'r exactly Elk medecine... I also have some 140Gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets I have yet to try. I havent heard great reviews on them tho, probably a great deer round but I'm concerned about penetration on a big body animal? everybody's thoughts on this are welcome.

Ive got some H4350 but the Hornady book I have doesnt list Min or Max powders for it. Any info on start and max loads would be welcome..

I have had good luck with Varget and Vihtavuori N550 out of my Tikka .260. Unfortunately I am a newer reloader without a Chronograph (maybe for Christmas?). I just load to fit the magazine. Have tried Nosler Accubonds and Barnes TSX's in 100 gr and 120 gr. With good success! Best of luck! :)

My brother modified his Tikka .260 magazine to accept 129 gr SST I think. Believe he removed the backstop, then inserted a thin plastic shim and glued - he can load to lands now. I do recall he had to bugger around with it a little but it works perfectly now.

Look at the online Nosler or Hodgdon load data - H4350 is there. With 130gr NAB 43.2gr is the ticket in my rifles.

That my friend is exactly what im looking for thanks

Well I made up rounds with H4350 and the 120gr GMX, started about half way from min and worked my to max in .5 incriments. results were less than spectacular. I loaded to mag length with these ones. I have some 125gr Partitions on the way in the mail and will have a go with them. Im begining to think that my Tikka doesn't like the GMX bullet. I'll post results with the Partitions. thanks for everybodys input.

If you want to load to the lands and still use factory parts you can use the 30-06 (or equivalent - I think they list them as Long) magazine, and a long bolt stop. I know guys that have filed the bolt stop down with success. I ordered mine from Stoeger Canada for $65. It comes in a package with both the short and long bolt stop. This is what i use to shoot 139gr Lapua behind H4350 in my 260 with great success.

In the three 260s that I have had, none of them like Hornady bullets. Maybe it is me or my loading techniques but I just could not make them work. I shoot the 140s and mine prefers H4831SC with Lapua brass and Federal GMM primers. I am now shooting a 6.5 swede in a Tikka Varmint rifle and it has the long throat as you described, I load the 136 Scenars as long as I can and still keep good bullet grip in the neck and it shoots sub MOA easily.

Well after many test rounds and several reloading sessions I found that my Tikka 260 Rem will shoot the 120 gr GMX, the load turned out to be 48.5gr H4831sc with COAL 2.830 which is mag length for my rifle. I also worked up a load with 125gr Partitions (This was Waaaay easier) than the 120gr GMX's. anyway settled on 39.5gr RL-15. both loads are sub MOA @ 100yrds. thanks for the input from everybody that chimed in my moment of need hahaha.
