Hello
I’m looking for an aftermarket chassis for an Tikka 6.5 PRC and wondering if they are action specific?
LA or SA?
Was thinking either a Tac21 or Cadex

Thanks

I can't speak to MDT or Cadex, but KRG (Kinetic Research Group) makes an entire line of stocks and chassis for the Tikka T3X and CTR lines. I have my CTR Barreled Action in KRG's flagship "Whiskey 3 Gen 6" Folding Stock Chassis. These chassis cost offer exceptional fit, finish and performance with excellent value for dollar based on a roughly $2K price-point for their top of the line configuration. Note that they only make Chassis for the Tikka Short Actions, NOT the Long Action calibres. Go Big Tactical, a CGN site sponsor, carries the KRG line of chassis, as does non-sponsor Red Deer Shooting Center. Here's mine:

It totally depends on the company.

For the most part they are either short or long action trying to fit into the AICS chassis systems as Pr Cook mentioned. You have a few outliers that will use factory tikka mags which can be beneficial for people who want to run a short action cartridge to a longer length. (Example being 6.5 PRC or the WSM and SAUM cartridges.) I think this is the best way for a Tikka but I also run multiple cartridges both long and short so I like not being stuck to one length.

Cadex makes one of their chassis in this configuration. An I believe KRG just released one at shot show in RH. However for the rest you’re looking at short or long action. 6.5PRC fits a short action but I like to run it longer if I can and then it won’t fit a short action mag.

I also believe PR Cook is releasing a chassis that takes tikka mags but it’s more a mountain hunters chassis than a competition style chassis.

What are you plans for the rifle ? Hunting or competition?

Honestly, I really like a pistol grip for hunting or target shooting.
It’s just so comfortable, but I do more target shooting than hunting.
I got my Tikka L/A with a 6.5 PRC 22 inch barrel and was leaning towards a Tac21 chassis.

My bad, the mag length is 3.560 not 3.750 and no, I did nothing to the feed lips.. Feeding has been 100% with no issues.

Thats good to hear. I know it has been an issue for some so I am always happy to hear others are having success. I use NDr Shooting Supplies magazines as they feed like butter for anything I put down them.

I mean technically all T3 and T3X rifles are long action ;).

If your planning to run long or don't want to be hindered by mag length going to a LA chassis is the way to do. Especially in a 6.5 PRC, I run a few loads that won't fit in a factory magazine that I hang probably a little far out.

I legit thought the Tac21 got discontinued but I see GEN2 is still for sale. Definitely a good option for target shooting and will double over into hunting no problem.

So, MDT has the option of either a S/A or L/A chassis but either will work? With the only difference being lenght of mag?

I plan on using 143 ELD

Are you hand loading or running factory ammo ?

MDT does the SA/LA for mag length on Tikka's to get them into the AICS pattern. If you plan to hand load I would run LA for the peace of mind knowing if you choose to switch projectiles or run long projectiles then you can with ease. SA will limit your ability to run longer COAL however it is designed to run Saami Spec ammunition for the 6.5 PRC which is a max of 2.955. The MDT SA magazine for 6.5 PRC and the WSM family allows for a max COAL of 2.955. I see people who run a 2.964 for the 143 ELD-X but those are hand loads.

I don't run the 143s so I have no personal load data or measurements to confirm.

The safe bet would be to run a LA chassis. I have hear some people need to modify the feed lips on magazines but if you get metal that shouldn't be much of an issue. Poly mags don't like to bend...

I’ve run an XLR Elelement - nice but heavy - a Robertson Composites - nice but little to nothing to attach extras to the rifle - and now run several KRG Bravos which I quite like. Those are all 1k ish options. MDT and JAE make very nice stuff that I haven’t had the chance to try.

That looks sharp! I had a Bravo for a Tikka project but ended up changing direction. I liked the Bravo but that Whisky 3 looks great.
