I want to purchase a .223 bolt action for some occasional fun.
My girlfriend recently while watching action movie (she loves those over girly movies...god bless her :D) and while doing so, she, just out the blue, says, i'd like to do sniper shooting, that looks cool  ... REALY, i say .. i haven't even taken her out yet and now I'm excited to take her out...and share shoot'n :adult:

So, anyways, it's still on the soon side, as she may not like it after trying it... but still want to have one for her and my kids to go out with once in a while....my AR - 14" is o.k. too to just get a feel for it..but want a bolt gun for longer range practice....
so, one guy at one store says they prefer Remington 700 .. other guy in other store says Tikka is way better and more accurate than Remington.....
So, I ask here... those of you who really believe you've experienced these guns and any other you want to add to the mix on which is good for my purpose of occasional shooting and for possible future matches... ?

my Price range is only up to $1,000.00... with scope on top of that....for now....

Get a heavy barrel T3 with a 1:8 in twist. Handloading heavy 75-80 gr bullets will allow you to reach out to 1000 yards.

I'd choose a factory Tikka over a factory Remington, no questions asked, any day of the week. If you're talking custom or semi-custom rigs, the 700 gets a lot more competitive, but for an unmodified factory rifle, Tikka, no question.

I am in the midst of searching for a Remmi 700 myself in .223, I am completely sold on a bull barrel and not a varmint. I have not shot a Tikka but have heard nothing but great things about them. These I feel are all quality rifles for a decent price, so its pretty much what your heart desires (I mean that in the least cheesiest way possible :p) pick whatever you like the most, I just love the look of the 700's and how customizable they are.

Tikka..
I've got three Tikka Varmint models...(.222,.223 and .260) and all shoot sub 0.5 MOA with handloads.....out of the box.
If I were going to 'customize'...new barrel, stock, trigger, etc., I would go with a Remington SPS Varmint or Tactical and shoot the barrel out before going the custom route.....

All the rifles mentioned above would do but for a fun gun that you could walk all day and snipe targets I would look at one of the CZ's.
Great little accurate rifles.

I have both Tikka and Remington, and have owned several of each.

If you want a gun that you can pull out of the box and shoot very well, with fewer crappy examples to pollute the shelves, go Tikka. As Foxbat says, they can be made to shoot VERY well out of the box.

The down side is some people dislike the polymer stocks ( I love them) and they are not an easy gun for which to find go-faster accessories.

Remington is the Chevy truck of rifles. They do the job adequately. Some shoot like a house on fire, some shoot like schitt, and the majority fall somewhere in between. They are the best platform for finding accessories and I would argue they are the safest factory action out there.

I have an SPS Varmint in 204 Ruger to which I have done nothng and it it excellent. I like everything about it. I also have owned (and currently hunt with) Tikkas and I have yet to own one that did not shoot sub-half MOA.

Rem

Even though I have a couple of Tikka's all my heavy barrel rifles are Rem 700's, including one in .223 Rem.... ;)

NAA.

I have a Tikka lite in .223. Depends on if you plan to do alot of walking. You said its for target practise, so go with the heavier bbl.

You could consider the Savage 12VF w/accutrigger.

So far some good advise.. Thanks... I do not plan to hunt with it or do any walking except from the safety bench to the shooting stall...
so heavy barrel sounds like good idea... though is for my girlfriend and kids to enjoy more than for me, i'm sure even the extra wight of a Heavy barrel will not be issue for this purpose..
Tikka sounds like the choice to go for out of the box quality and accuracy... no planning to modify too much...though can the tikka's trigger pull be modified ?

can the tikka's trigger pull be modified ?

It comes about 3.5lbs, and then you crank the little built in allen-screw adjustment to adjust it down to around 2lbs (as low as you'd ever want to go outside of a competition benchrest rig, IMHO). It's already as crisp as can be to boot. The nice light/crisp trigger on a Tikka is one of my favourite things about these guns.

If you wanted it lighter than that, I'm sure a qualified gunsmith could do something about that.

If you want out of the box GUARANTEED 1MOA accuracy then go with the Tikka. One of the only manufacturers to back up their rifles with this guarantee.

if you plan on upgrading the barrel, stock, trigger, etc in the future then I would go with the Remington.

I have a Rem 700 heavy barrel in 7-08 (yes I know, different calibre than discussed), 1980's vintage, and a Tikka heavy barrel in 22-250, same vintage. They both shoot .3 MOA. IMHO, for new manufacture, go with the tikka
