I vote for savage. Accutriggers are awesome, and I've never heard of a savage shooting bad. Don't just go by the poll results, see if you can check a few out, maybe bring the girlfriend along and let her have a say, and get the one that you like the best.

o.k... Savage has been mentioned a few times now...went on their website... sounds like a good gun now... some more feedback on this gun would be great.. it seems to be less costly...is it as good as or better than the Tikka or Remington

Rem and Savage out of the box will be about the same. Some are scary accurate and some are less than stellar in the accuracy dept.

90% + will shoot MOA or better but you can still get a 5PM Friday rifle from either company.

My first choice would be the tikka varmint. I have the same rifle. Just get heavy bullets for it. Mine hated the whitebox winechester 55gr. UMC wasnt too bad. Now I reload for it with 77 and 80gr and it shouts great. My next choice would be a heavy barrel savage. I caressed one in a mcmillan stock last week and loved it. The action isnt quite as nice as the tikka but is still a really nice rifle.

If you want a heavy barrel plus a decent scope for under a grand or so in a new gun, you're looking at the Savage 10fp. A Tikka Varmint will run you around $1100 or so new. I had a Savage 10fp in the Choate stock, and after Mysticplayer bedded, and timed the bolt it was shooting.225 5 shot groups for the new owner. I found it a pain to load though. So today I bought a Tik-Tac

I have a Rem VLS. Adjusted the trigger, free floated the barrel and it will shoot moa with the cheap FMJ ammo.
You can find alot of after market goodies for the Rem.

great thread, I am asking myself the same question (but diff caliber)

I was set on a rem700 vtr, but the more I read the forum, the more I question if I am better off with a tikka/savage...seems to me a lot of people have had good results with them, and the rem's are a hit and miss, and I don't tend to be the luckiest person out there

I will keep my eye on this thread to see how it develops :D

.223 rifle

Wel, I'm getting some good advise here...though, I'm getting some replies with reason behind their advise and then getting some advise without any reason to back it up....?
Guys, please, I'm a dummy re: long guns and terminology..., so please go the extra distance and give me more to understand the advise...like for example... my rem. 700 shoots like a dream...? i'm guessing its shoots fantastic groups? or he dreams of it alot .... :p
I'm really hoping for advise from the guys who have been doing this for a while and have owned or shot more than one brand and truly experienced the difference....thus, can advise accordingly.

one quote said, rate of twist affects bullet size to use.... ? o.k. thanks, but guys, please finish..to explain which gr. with which rate of twist...
again, i'm a dummy in re: to long gun stuff... i even forget what MOA means....

So far it seems Tikka is preferred choice... Remington is a very good gun I'm sure....but I do want the best $1000 will buy for staight out of the box quality and accuracy ...even if it's only a minor difference....

I'm still up for getting some more advise.... I don't want to jump into the Tikka if i can get a great accuracy from a savage and sve some cash...unleass truly worth the extra few $$ .. my limit is around $1000, so not so high to begin with....

ps.. one guy replied about getting an AR type.....if he read my thread, he would know i already have an armalite 14" barrel :D .. which my girlfriend will start on to see if she enjoys shoot'n then we'll go to the bolt action as she's claiming to want to do sniper type shoot'n ...

Remington 700 all the way. Either the LTR or 700P (Police) model will shoot extremely well straight out of the box. All steel, with excellent kevlar/graphite/fiberglass stocks. Lots of accessory upgrades available and easily rebarrelled after you shoot out yours.

Tikka makes good rifles, but latest models have too much plastic on them and I find that both the Tikka Varmint and Tactical are over-priced for what you actually end up with. If my heart was set on a Tikka, I'd shop around for an older model that has been well cared for. All steel and wood, no plastic!...or better yet, a quality classic SAKO!

I love my T3 Varmint in 6.5x55. Heavy? Yes. Accurate out of the box? Yes. Have to muck around with it? No. Great trigger, smooth action. I would however appreciate a better stock. however in 6.5x55 a factory HB is very rare. I have also looked at the CZ's beautiful set trigger on those!

If you look long enough you will find it under your mark with decent glass.

If you plan on saving cash, don't. take what you save from the tikka vs savage and invest that much more into better glass...

I'm likely to still go cheap on the glass...cause for now it's for only some fun...a $200 scope, but reputable brand that hold it's mark.... fog proof, shock proof, etc.... can't afford more than that .... again. can always upgrade if it becomes serious hobby to shoot this gun..

I agree with the guy who suggested shopping around and going used. Most gun shops are full of just what your looking for. Don't forget to check the trade forum here on CGN. If you go with a cheaper scope you might end up extremely frustrated when you are trying to zero it. The lower end scopes don't have very solid adjustment parts and it might take a few shots for it to settle before you get an accurate shot. I've heard of some guy's tapping the turrets with a coin to settle the parts before shooting. The other concern is what the turrets are graduated in for adjustment, you will want 1/4 inch @ 100 yards. Another point is that when you have the lower quality scope at max magnification the target could be blurry. Another thing to keep it enjoyable is to use the same ammo all the time. Try stay with the same manufacturer and grain.

Most importantly, go out and have fun. My wife loves to lay down beside me and shoot one of my .22's for hours, but only as long as I keep it fun ;~)

I agree that you can't go wrong with many of the rifles listed; tikka's, savage's, remy's, and that buying one used is a good option if you're on a budget. One rifle to look at or for, that I think may work well for you is a remingtion XR-100. It was kinda of a beginners target rifle: single shot, bolt action, adjustable trigger, heavy barrel available in 204 ruger, 223 rem, and 22-250. The only down side is the barrel twist (1-14) is not really suited for launching heavier bullets.

Also, don't skimp on the scope, I learned the hard way as I'm sure many others on this forum have that when it comes to optics you get what you pay for. After buying and using higher quality optics I can barely stand using the cheap scopes I bought when I first started shooting. My advice to you if you want to save a little money is to buy a fixed 10x or 12x power.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.

o.k.. true, i'm a budget...but don't want that to sway me to get a used $500 o so gun... i prefer to go new and work in the barrel slowly...don't want gun that i don't know how it was taken care of...
i don't mind to pay that extra $100 or so to get which gun is known for out of the box accuracy....
re: scope.. i don't want cheap like under $100... but maybe approx. $200-ish ..this should be enough to at least get one thats reputable and can hold it's zero...... i know optics are imprtant...but this is just for fun gun....and likely to stay that way...and do want good gun and just good enough optics to do the job...i can upgrade in future if we take it to the next level...or just have more money to throw at it later....
i have leupold vx11 for my Bar .300win mag..moose gun...good quality is needed there...

if tikka is the best out of the box gun avail...i'll probably go with the HB s/s barrel varmit...it's $1,100 at lebaron... not sure if cheaper anywhere else.. ? it's a bit pricey for me.... but if worth it...i can squeeze it, so as to not look back on my decision....
