Thanks! here are my thoughts:
It would be nice to buy a shootable rifle right away, and make my modifications one at a time when the money is available. I would get some nice optics first. Then make or buy a stock suited to me, channeled for the eventual barrel contour. Next, a custom heavy barrel (not so huge as to block bed, I'd be much more comfortable to pillar bed and float the barrel), and I will install it and ream the chamber and throat myself. Then I'll address the trigger.
This would leave the original action, reciever, and floorplate assembly. The considerations for the original rifle are the proper action length, size of bolt face, and quality of parts that will remain in the finished product.
I had a look at a T3 today, and what concerned me was the cheap plastic floorplate, magazine assembly, and the plastic part at the rear of the bolt. The magazine and bolt are not serious compared to the floorplate, it has to go.
So, do the older ones have the same sort of parts that I have noted, or are they of better quality? It has been a while since I had my hands on one. I'm starting to consider a T3 because it seems that no one wants to sell their left-handed 595/695's! I am also considering the Nesika Bay action, and might end up with the rem 700, but I really like the tikka. Again, thanks for your help.
Cheers!
(p.s. I ask this in the hunting rifle forum because almost all of these rifles are set up for hunting, mine will be for targets too.)
