Tikka short magnum barrell length ?

Ok, this is a dumb question considering I own a Tikka T3 300 WSM .... but I am a bit confused after reading a thread on another forum .

I know that the action on a Tikka short magnum isn't any shorter than a regular magnum as they just use a spacer or block or whatever you want to call it ? but is the barrell on a Tikka WSM not 2" shorter than a regular Win Mag ?
I read something on another forum that said the actions and barrells are all the same ?
I checked Tikka's website, but the specs are kind of confusing ? It lists "T3 Mag" having 24"3/8 barrells, and then just "T3" as having a 22"7/16 barrell but doesn't specify for short magnums ?
I assumed the Short mag had the 22" barrell ?? I never bothered to measure my gun when I bought it, and Its locked in a cabinet behind the quad in the garage right now, and im too lazy to get it :rolleyes:

On the Tikka page on the bottomleft under downloads there is Tikka T3 Database download. In there it shows the length of the mag and short mag as the same.

So if the WSM and WM are the same ..... then whats the point, or advantage to a short mag in this gun ?

I feel pretty stupid for not doing my homework a little better before buying the gun now :redface: I was under the impression the Short Mags had a 2" shorter barrell on whatever gun it came in .
I was actually leaning towards the regular win mag for ammo price and availability and being able to go heavier than 180 grain.... but I also liked the idea of a shorter gun because I like to hike in the thick stuff.

I wanted a camo stainless, and they only had one... and it was the 300 wsm, so I went for it thinking oh well, at least I am getting a slightly shorter and lighter gun :rolleyes: Guess not :redface:
 
In most guns the short action means the action is actually a little shorter and in the WSM's they usually shorten the barrel a little too. This make them a little handier in the bush I agree. However Tikka only makes one action, and they use a different bolt stop location and different magazine. In this case it looks like they use the same length barrel as well. Oh well still a nice rifle, I own one in 260 and have a 204 en route.

Yes, its still a great gun, just wish I had known the demensions were the same. I would have held out for a regular Win Mag .
With the WSM I gained nothing but more expensive and harder to find ammo :mad:

I was just checking out the specs of the X bolt. Their Short mags are 4 inches shorter overall .... now that is worth something .
 
On the T3 that I had (300WSM) the barrel was 24". The advantage (if you call it that) of the short action is that it is a) lighter, b) The shorter, fatter cartridge of the WSM is supposed to have a more uniform burn resulting in flatter trajectory. The first point, IMHO, is not a plus with the Tikka because the resulting recoil from a lighter gun is painful to say the least. A Limbsaver helps but it's still one hell of a wallop.

Recoil isn't an issue for me, I dont know why ? but I really like it ... I crave it :evil: Shooting 5 or 10 1oz slugs through my 12 ga 870 is like scratching an itch:D
I have read about the shorter case giving a more uniform burn, and that its able to burn all its powder in a shorter barrell (the reason it should have a shorter barrell)..... but as far as shooting flatter ... some seem to think thats a myth ?

Oh well, I like the gun, its a good shooter, its light, and has a silky smooth action . Its a keeper .... but if I buy another short magnum, it wont be a Tikka .
