Tikka T1x Review

Perfect. It looks like the T1x barrel has a slightly heavier profile than the T3, I was hoping I wouldn't have to open up the Hunter stock in that area. It would be nice to leave it mostly OEM original for resale value, though as mentioned earlier I think a large portion of the used Tikka stock market will be for the T1x anyway.

The T1x barrel is heavier than the lite but there’s still plenty of room.

Finally got mine.

A few initial observations:

Feels and looks like a Tikka.
The plastic muzzle thread, while plastic, doesn’t make the gun look “budget” but the plastic recoil pas does.
The bolt is not Tikka smooth but may improve with time.
The mag, while plastic, is similar to other Tikka mags and I have no doubts about the durability. It seats nicely and I was surprised to find that it actually feels quite nice in the hand as you are removing it. Not sure if that makes sense, but it’s easy to grasp.
The barrel profile is similar to a T3 Lite, maybe a little heavier.
Overall the balance and weight is nice.

I’ll hopefully tinker with it in the coming days and have more or say.

Went out again today, temps not bad about -5 or so. Didn’t shoot well and was more focused on testing loads for a 308 but brought the 22 along to try some HV CCI. All 10 shot groups.

50m:
TL: CCI SV
TR: Eley Sport
I was shooting wild, started to settle in after these two
BL: Eley Sport
BR: CCI HV HP
Center: CCI HV solid

The low left hit on the center target was not me, it was the frustrating 1 in 10 CCI flyer. The other flyer that group I didn’t see, don’t know if it was me or not.

Repeated shooting (no pics) was about the same except not as wild as the top groups, and it proved that the Tikka doesn’t like CCI HV HP but does like the solid. I didn’t do as well with the Eley today but it seemed to go where it should. I didn’t shoot any warming or ammo changing shots prior to shooting groups, don’t know if that matters or not.

100m
Was concentrating on tracking 308 shots but did one round of T1x 22. The obvious flyer was me nudging the bag without moving my finger off the trigger, but despite that stupid move I took my time with. these shots with proper breathing, etc. Hit quite high because I just cranked the scope up 6” as a guess. Ignore 30 cal holes, especially how bad they are lol... new powder, new bullets.

Thanks. According to Canada Post my T1X was supposed to be here today, but is somewhere other than here. I opened a tracking ticket on it. Scope and rings arrived yesterday. Not sure when the rail will be here.

I went with 20 to start with. Factory trigger was 4lbs 3ounces,just by turning down the grub screw it’s now 19 ounces

FWIW when I got my rifle I used my Wheeler to remove the screws. Factory torque seemed to be around 40 in-lb. My trigger was 3#13oz out of the box

mikepos I think the rifle looks fantastic in that wood stock!!

There is a person on rimfirecentral in the states who ran into trouble when he backed the grub screw out right to the black screw. Firing pin was sliding forward when he locked the bolt down. Solution was to turn the grub back in till spring touched trigger.

I saw that too but I backed mine out until it touched and everything is fine

Thanks. It shoots at least as good as it did in the varmint too. I never tried it in the original stock

Hope you don't mind me posting this in your thread mike but I took mine out today for the first time.

I have 5 or 6 kinds of 22LR ammo but only took a couple today.

2°C, foggy.
4.5-14x44 Bushnell on cheap Burris 11mm airgun/rimfire dovetail rings

Best 10 shot groups were both with 40 grain CCI AR Tactical ammo @ 1200 fps (the other ammo was Federal)

50 yards, sand bags (zero'ed scope at 50), I adjusted my finger on the trigger part way through the group hence the initial 3 shots to the right.

100 yards using the scope reticle for about 6" holdover (the CCI was 15 shots for fun)

Rifle with the aluminum end cap I turned on the lathe

I am comparing this to my CZ455 Grey Thumb-hole w/fluted Varmint barrel. On the Tikka the trigger is better, the action is better especially the short lift and throw.
The OEM stock cheek weld is not good for me but I bought a T3x Varmint stock on the EE which will be here next week.

Based on an hour shooting today this rifle is a definite winner. 1MOA at 100 yards fairly quick fire.

The “shoe horn” will also fit in the varmint stock so now you another test to plan

Looks very promising. Thanks for the pics and post. Close up pics of the end cap would be nice also.

Pretty much a direct copy of the plastic cap.

I also have a chunk of 5/8 brass stock I'm going to make one out of to see what it looks like (and a piece of steel I'll cold blue also).

So I can colour coordinate the end cap, lol....

Cool. I wish I had the skill and the equipment. Please keep me in mind if you are going to make extras.

edit to add....looked into anodizing aluminum. Steel would be easier to blue to match the barrel if that is a consideration.

Very nice! I’d be more for the blued steel myself but that’s a smashing job. The brass will look interesting too though

Not to derail the tread...some guy names Sterk Shooting makes Tikka parts and is supposed to be working on T1X upgrades. These are some T3 parts I found online. Apparently he has pics of the T1X parts on Facebook.
