Tikka T3 action caliber change Q's

If you want a .308 then you need a short action with a .308 bolt face. Such as a .243, .308, 22-250, etc are SA .308 bolt face. While we are at it....270, 30-06, 25-06, etc are .308 bolt face long action. Short action in .223 bolt face(which only come in a SA) are cals like 204, 223, 222, etc. then you have magnum long actions such as 7mm, 300wm, 300 RUM. There are more but basically if you want a .308 then you are looking for a .308 bolt face in a short action. Hope that helps. This applies to actions in general, as stated before a tikka has same length of action. If you want to keep it simple watch for a .243, .308 etc.

I think on the CTR the spacer must be built into the bottom metal and position the magazine all the way to the front of the action. This is purely speculation though, as I have only handled one briefly a few weeks ago, it did shoot really nice though. Very excited for when mine finally shows up!

To add to the thread.

B/O like everything Tikka.

action screw spacing and magazines are all the same length, short action/long action is determined by the bolt stop as shown in the video.
You can take a bolt out of a 30-06 and install it into a 308 and it will fit in the action, may not headspace on the barrel but it will fit in the action.

any bolt with a .473 boltface will work for you, this includes the 22-250 from the short action and the 270 win from the long action.........

yodave, where did you find the info on the head space of diff caliber? you mesured it yourself?

You're sure for the .270?

Thx

Correct me if I am wrong here guys, but all T3 actions are the same length, the short-medium-long designation comes form the length of the bolt stop only and the MT designation is in regards to barrel length only the way I read it. All the magazines have the same external dimensions as well, but as COAL shortens, the factory adds a block in the back of the magazine to shorten it up.

Like I said, please point out my errors if I am off base here. Thanks.
Your correct.
The external dimension of the magazine are the same but the internal are slightly different. A WSM case will not fit into a magnum magazine 338,300WM etc. it bulges the sides and binds up the mag.

it is a lot like a Remington, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you need to add or remove a thread on the barrel

Little update.

I've picked up a new Tikka T3 243 stainless and a Broughton barrel .30, can't wait for both to arrive and send everything to the smith.

I'm looking at what? 250-300$ to fit the barrel to the action? chambering, threading for a brake etc etc

Will have a brand new Tikka lite stock and stainless 243 barrel for sale soon. :)
