Tikka t3 CTR or a Savage 10TR

a regular T3 and a T3 CTR are two different rifles, the 1k price tag is very reasonable

I don't think it's high... we're not talking about a regular T3 lite... the CTR has a much more robust and solid stock, more like a Tikka Tactical. Plus the threaded muzzle, plus the metal double stack mags, plus teflon bolt, plus medium heavy barrel, etc.....
sorry, i miss read it...your right, still the Tikka is the way to go in my opinion

Owned a few Tikka's and Sako's but currently don't have any. Owned lots of Savages and currently have two. Neither a fanboy or a hater but I will say this - if you want smoothness and overall quality go with a Tikka every time.

From my point of view, both are heavy for hunting and I don't like hunting with $1000 plus 24x scopes unless it's sitting in one spot and calling, over bait or something to that respect. Then they are fine. I have a 10tr for longrange work and target shooting. Amax's are great for paper, yotes and wolves.
You can put the money you save toward a dedicated hunting rifle for everything else and have all your bases covered.
I guess it depends on what you want to hunt and your style of hunting.

I have hunted with both the mag system on the tr is not great. If you are using it for anything other than target punching get the tikka. My tikka will print sub moa groups. The tr is a great "budget" rifle but if you are hunting you cannot beat the smooth tikka action and will avoid the fatigue of a heavy rifle.

The 10TR is not really meant as a hunter, but if that's how you chose to use it then by all means. But it was meant (or at least was originally marketed) as a law enforcement sniper rifle. The bull barrel is 24 inches and the accustock has partial aluminum bedding up front which makes the rifle front-heavy or "unbalanced". I fixed that problem myself by adding weight to the butt stock. For me, more weight is good since I go for distance and accuracy. Makes for a more stable platform.

I can tell you that it is dead accurate straight out of the box. The first rounds I put through it were the day after I got it, some 150gr Fed bluebox, a cheap Nikon scope and it was pulling sub MOA at 100 yards. Though these days that's not too difficult to achieve on most platforms. Since then I've done some minor mods to the rifle, a muzzle brake, some better scope rings and balanced the weight of the rifle. I took it to the range yesterday and was ringing steel at 450 yards with custom loads.

In case anyone is curios. My 10TR likes 168 SMK HPBT's with a 45gr charge of Varget behind them. And from what I've read as of late that seems to be the most common load, or close to it, that every 10TR owner is using.

So that's my experience with the rifle. My only gripe with it really is the bolt release system. But that's minor and once you get used to it you don't even think about it.
