I'm looking at purchasing a Tikka T3 CTR in 20"barrel in either...

.223
or
.308

I'm looking at shooting to around the 300 yard mark into paper and maybe hunting so is the .223 sufficient in 20" barrel over the 308?
If I went the 308 then that would be better past the 500 yard mark in a 24" barrel

Is my newbie logic sound or am I missing something

Depends on what you are hunting. In Canada you can hunt anything with a 308 but a .223 limits you to game smaller than deer (not including deer ethically). While as small a calibre as 22LR can kill a moose doing so is rather Unethical as it is unlikely to result in a one shot humane kill. To hunt ethically once must consider the energy required to penetrate the animals hide, bone and vital organs along with how the energy of the bullet carries at certain distance. If you are hunting out to 500m the 223 will not have enough energy for medium to large game.

.223- wolves, coyotes, gophers, etc....

.308- anything in North America (Deer, Moose, Elk etc...) It may be overkill for smaller game

If your going to have just one rifle I would take the 308 for greater versatility. I'm not up on the Tikka resale market but i'd think the 308 would resell better down the road too for that same reason. If however this rifle is for picking off Varmints at range on the farm etc than a .223 should cover well.

Absolutely love my CTR in .308
No problem smoking the gong at 500. Some say it's a bit heavy as a hunting rig, but I can't complain, worth the weight. Cant speak about the .223 though. Good luck.

I have a CTR, but it is a 6.5CM with 24" barrel. Accuracy is sub 1/2moa with my handloads. For big game hunting go 6.5CM or 308 win. For varmints only, the 223 will do fine.
