Tikka T3 lite for a .338 Win Mag Cartridge

well......I had 3 t3's........270wsm, 300wsm,and a 6.5 x 55........T sold the first two because of the recoil ......end of story

A hunting buddies dad had his laminate stock spit with the recoil from the .338 win mag ! Too big a caliber for too light a gun IMO.A .416 Rigby in a CZ is a pussycat compared to a T3 in .338

I shoot 338 in a heavy rifle, and own a 30-06 in T3.

If your intention is too lower the recoil of the 338 by going T3, that is not going to work. I replaced the factory pad on the T3 30-06 with a limbsaver for about $50, because the recoil on the 06 T3 was at least 300 mag level.

I have shot both a Ruger Hawkeye that I used to own and one of my hunting partners T3 in a left hand bolt, both in 338, I didn't find the recoil bad on either.

I shoot a T3 lite stainless in 338wm and the recoil is so heavy that it is damaging the bullet tips in the mag, My plan is to put it in a Boyds laminate stock that is a pound heavier than the original and add a mercury recoil reducer to the butt with the limbsaver pad as well. If I cannot sort this out I'll get another rifle!

I'm familiar with .338s, including the .340 Wby. I've owned them, developed loads for them and fired them at the range and taken them hunting. The .340 Wby had the greatest recoil, as we'd expect, at 54 ft-lbs. It was SS in LH with a 26" barrel and weighed less than 9 lbs ready for a fight. My load was a 250 Nos Part at 3000 fps. My second son has a Rem Mountain Rifle in .338 Win Mag that weighs about 8.5 lbs ready. Recoil from a 250 at about 2725 is around 40 ft-lbs.

I also have a T3 Lite in 9.3 X 62 when all up goes 7.4 lbs ready for bear, moose, etc. I shoot 286 Nos Partitions at an indecent MV. I can guarantee that the recoil is less that the .340 Wby and more than my son's .338. It's original... nothing has been changed or added except a scope and sling. It holds 3 in the clip and is now my favourite medium with accuracy sub-moa from the 286 Nosler when I do my part.

I've shot lots of Big Bores, and still do. I turned 79 a few days ago and weigh 160 lbs. 45 - 50 ft-lbs of recoil hasn't maimed anyone yet that I'm aware of, including self. Connie Brooks of Barnes Bullets weighs about 100 lbs soaking wet and shoots some REAL cannons! It's all about learning how to shoot and only spending enough time at the bench to test loads and sight them in. Fear and not knowing how to manage a powerful rifle is what makes the recoil obnoxious, not recoil per se. But, yes, use whatever may help like a Decelerator pad.
