Tikka T3 Lite SS or Savage Weather Warrior 16/116 FCSS

Tikka. In 6.5x55 Swede. Super lightweight, non-existant recoil & enough 'oomph' to knock down anything. Having tried tried the accutrigger, I am not a huge fan of it. My tikka t3, out of the box, was superb - to the point where I have never needed to adjust it. I replaced the sling swivels to a personal preference, I haven't changed the bolt shroud for an aluminum one; With the current recoil, I don't believe this to be an issue. As printed above, the stock 'seems' cheap. It works, but it isn't an issue. I may replace mine in the future for a 'prettier' one. All in all, I wouldn't switch this rifle for anything other than a Sako. The Finn's offer a quality which seems to be lost to a lot of American producers lately.

Plastic bolt parts, plastic magazine, cheap stock to the point of possible replacement. You call this better quality......................

I love the Swede 6.5x55mm cartridge. It has a flat trajectory, light recoil and can be loaded up to 160gr. projectile. I also own a .308. If you are concerned about hunting, the Swede round has taken down moose for a lot longer than the .308 Win has. Ammo cost is a bit more but a Tikka in 6.5x55mm, an amazing combination. I handload, so I squeeze out even more accuracy out of already accurate round. Though for an additional 250$ you can pick up your tikka in .308 and pick up a sporterized d &t Swede M96 in 6.5x55mm from Trade Ex and have both.

I pulled the plug on a Tikka lite SS in 30-06. In left hand that was all that was available anyhow and it's also a good all around caliber that's plentiful and inexpensive.

You will not be disappointed, I have the T3 hunter with open sights in 30-06. if you hold the rifle sideways that nice extractor will throw casings over your shoulder. its a beaut. never had any problems with the plastic bolt shroud or magazine and i use it for hunting so it doesn't get babied

I'm looking at a .338wm for a dedicated moose/bear hunting rifle and both these 2 rifles are on my list of rifles to check out. I know this is a tikka vs savage thread but how does the xbolt stand up next to these 2 fine rifles?

Thanks guys. What's wrong with the plastic bolt shroud anyway?

Having shot my Tikka 338 hundreds of times with the factory plastic shroud - NOTHING. Its a CGN thing, not to many other places on the web make an issue of it.

I also have a "higher" end Savage in 300wsm, my nod would be to the Tikka. It has a better stock, trigger and feel, imho.

i have shot both and am personally a fan of the savage mine are very accurate and after playing with both I found the fit to be much better for me
both are good guns I say go play with them or spend some time at the range and try out a couple models of each
also a huge fan of the 308 and 308 based cartridges for recoil saving there are only a couple pounds difference between a 308 and 3006 not as big as people say
a properly fitted rifle will make all the difference consider an aftermarket cheek riser

good luck I don't think you will regret either or

Nobody has mentioned the fact that it's relatively easy to DIY change barrels with the Savage models. Huge plus in my book, but not a significant factor for everyone.

For a rifle that you're not ever going to modify or rebarrel, I would probably recommend the Tikka. They are very refined rifles, and you can feel the difference. As long as you are going to be satisfied with a few more plastic parts... but as has been noted, failures of these parts are not common. I just don't like plastic magazines on a hunting rifle. Even Glocks have steel magazine tubes!

Savage is a collection of cheaply made parts with poor fitment and low quality control standards that work OK together.

Tikka is a collection of cheaply made, but very high quality parts, with very precise fitment and very high quality control standards that work perfectly together.

I asked myself this exact question when I was purchasing my first hunting rifle. Same 2 rifles, same caliber. I went with Tikka my brother went with Savage, and after 5 years I would do it go with Tikka every time.

Both are really accurate, but I prefer the smooth cycling of the Tikka over the Savage.

Also I love the stock on the Tikka, I never understood the hate I've read about the Tikka stock.

Both are wrong. The Browning X-bolt is superior in every way, but is also more expensive. But it's better to buy the right rifle off the bat.

X-Bolt:
60 degree bolt lift (Tikka is 70 degree, and Savage is a ridiculous 90 degree!) - this is a big deal for me. The 90 Savage bolt is too close to the scope, and you lose speed and precision of quick bolt cycles.
Best synthetic stock
Best butt stock pad
Arguably the best bolt design

Tikka:
Crap synthetic stock
Butt Stock pad not as good as X-bolt
plastic bolt

Savage:
90 degree bolt (deal killer for me).

I'll say that the Weather Warrior is one of Savages best rifles... It's tough, has an asjustable trigger, the accu stock is plenty stiff for what it is... Drop floorplate to remove bullets, stainless barrel. Very accurate and the weight of the rifle will match the caliber. A 300 WSM is easy to shoot because it has a good recoil pad. The only things that are missing is a cheekpiece - as the high bolt throw means higher mounts. So there isn't much to complain about.
The tikka is a bit nicer looking rifle but has a lighter profile on the stock and the barrel. Clips / magazines work fine. less bolt throw, safety is easy to use. Not a bad gun in it's category. But it is less gun then a Sako, which would be my first choice.

Once one steps up in power and size of cartridge it's better to get a rifle built to the profile of the cartridge. Less recoil and more comfortable to shoot. Brownings are great rifles too, and shoot well too. These are all decent rifles and each can do the job that they are called upon to do. Don't cheap out on a scope cause Murphy's Law rules on a week long hunt in the rain.

Well after spending some time reading all the above threads I decided to put in my 0.02 worth..........

I own a Tikke T3 Lite stainless in 270wsm, just love the rifle all around. Great stock, smooth bolt with a great trigger and super accurate. I've never had an issue with the bolt shroud or the mag.
I also own a Browning A bolt stainless in 300wsm, its accurate but the stock is hollow so it's noisy in the woods if bumped against a tree or a rock, the bolt needs a little humph at the end of the travel to lock it in place, the trigger sucks... had to have it ajusted.
I also own a couple of Savages,,,,,,, one of which is an FCSS in 308 with a bull barrel, very accurate, bolt so-so, accutrigger not really an issue since this rifle only sees the range but it is ajusted real low.
So to make a long story short well I would place the Tikka at the fore front.
