From what I have seen, it seems that most people are building their target/tactical/precision rifles out of Remington 700's. Buy a descent one and it shoots great out of the box. Spend $1000+ on it in upgrading and you have yourself a pretty mean rifle that will shoot better than I can anyway. Does anyone have any experience with the Tikka T3 Tactical. I like the look of it but have never heard much about how they shoot. Are they comparable to the 700's? What would need to be done to a T3 to make it really perform....Or are they junk and I should give up and buy a 700.
I know that quality of scope and abuility to find a load that the gun likes plays a huge role...I'm talking about all that kind of stuff aside.

If you want to spend the money, go with the Tikka. I have shot both and much prefer the Tikka. If you are looking for an out of the box rifle that shoots good with a nice stock and heavy barrel, the Savage with the McMillan or HS stock are both very nice rifles as well.

In relation to the tikka vs remmy. Both are nice rifles. If you want a rifle and you don't want to mess with it. Tikka, of you want to maybe, bed it later, put in a new trigger and have more options, remington. My buddy has a tikka and shoots really nice but can't do anything to it. For that very reason I will never own one. I like to mess with my rifles way to much. Lost of smiths won't or just don't work on them where as all smiths know how to mess with 700's.

tikka vs rem.

If you decide on a Remington, for accuracy be aware that only the sendero and vs sf II and vsf have full length bedding blocks and you will prolly have to free float the barrel which costs nothing to do yourself. Remington 700 action is rock solid and famous world wide. Tikka's quality has for sure dropped off as thier older M-595s (10 yrs ago) had a bolt that would open when you lifted the barrel about 10 degrees and as accurate as you could hold, As for the T-3s accuracy I can't say as I've never owned one.

Canadaman30, you hit the mark 100%, The M595 and M695 have recoil lug build into the action, I though that was very genius, but then they went and removed and put it on the stock, as for the T3 action, it very smooth, But It was very hard for me to like it, I own everything from 223, 243, 308, and end up sold everything. Now I much prefer reminton and Savage...

The 700 Police, LTRs and 5R milspec all have aluminum bedding blocks as well being HS or B&C stocks.
Personally the bedding block is maybe better than nothing, but proper bedding will still make the rifle shoot better in 99% of the cases.

Put a brake on the Tikka T3 Tac, and you are ready to go to town. If I was to do it all over again, I would be getting a T3 Tac and never look back. One day, when I ditch my Remingtons and Winchesters, I will be living with just the one Tikka.

I've owned two TiK Tacs and I own T-3 hunting rifles. They are superb, but what do you want? If you want a gun you can load and shoot really-really well, buy a Tikka. If you want a rifle to pimp-out, go Remington.

Tikka needs nothing, but it also allows almost nothing. The lug is in the stock, which severely limits your choice of after market stocks and the way the action is round-tapered at the front means that it will limit the diameter of the barrel you can use (cosmetically) if re-barreling.

Bed-it and shoot it and enjoy it.
