Im thinking about putting a red dot on my T3 for this years deer hunt. My thoughts are that it will make for a light fast rifle when I am dogging withbthe hounds. Shots will be fast and deer will be anywhere from 30 yards to 150 yards. Does anyone else hunt this way with bolt guns? Before everyone chimes in about "use the old 30-30" I have used one multiple times but am looking for something different. Thanks in advance.

It will work just fine... I've had a similar configuration. I eventually progressed towards fibre-optic Battue-style open sights for the close-in stuff and I find I'm more consistent and quicker on target. I wouldn't personally use a red dot beyond 100 yards, but that's just me.

Aimpoint sells micro sights with built in tikka bases for the Euro market, not sure if they are available in Canada.

I have an Aimpoint Micro H1 mounted on my Tikka 7mm-08. It's an unbeatable combination for the hunting conditions you described. It's lightning fast to get on target and perfect for rapid target acquisition. The battery life is literally 5 years (if left on continuously) so no concerns there either.

I have the 2 MOA dot version. With a rock solid rest (and some practice) I would take a 150 meter shot no question.

I was thinking about doing the same thing and recently picked up a Primary Arms red dot to experiment with. I think Primary Arms are associated with Holosun or are made in the same factory or something like that. I like it. It doesn't add much weight to the rifle and gets on target fast.
I think it will be perfect for a close range optic in the bush.

Red Dot would be perfect for your described hunting......I have hunted with Red Dots on semi autos and levers for many years, and when the action is fast nothing will beat them.

Thanks Brad, you are very helpful once again.

No worries man....... here is the scout in its natural habitat....
