Hello,

Was looking at getting a remington sps varmit but have found the Tikka T3's.
Is there a big performance difference between the t3 light and the t3 varmit? I obviously prefer the varmit, but having a budget...

Thanks

The Varmint will be more stable when shooting which can translate into more consistent good grouping. I use both, prefer the T3 Lite when I have long distances to carry. Shooter's Choice (Dealer) in Arrowood Alberta had some Varmints in 22-250 on sale for $895 if I remember correctly.

T3 lites are possibly the most accurate out of the box hunting rifle you can buy.
My t3 lite .270win can shoot 0.6" groups @100 and my T3 varmint .223rem shoots in the 0.2" to 0.3" range.

I don't think the heavy barrel really becomes a practical advantage unless you are shooting gophers or other high volume rodents. The regular T3 is very accurate.

The T3 lite has a lighter, tapered barrel. I have one in 308 and it shoots very accurately. As mentioned above, for hunting, I wouldn't bother with the varmint weight barrel. But, it depends on what you want to do with it. Whether you need a barrel that heats up slower after 5 or more shots.

Don't go any heavier than 45 in-lbs. You'll crush the metal washer liner on the floor plate if you go upwards of 55-60 in-lbs. Ask me how I know. I ended up having to pillar bed my stock because of this. Still shoots great ;)

I own a T3 lite in 338 federal and it is my exclusive hunting rifle. I have owned several, including 2 of the tactical models. they are - as has been stated - the most accurate firearms out of the box without any doubt in my mind.

If I were building a precision rifle, I'd buy a remington, for its action, but the Tikkas need nothing.

i bought a t3 light in 223 and i love it. so far the 1-8 twist shoots everthing under an inch except 40 grainers. They shoot one inch at a hunred. I often get half inch groups at one hundred yards. my best group is .422". I used to have a savage heavy barrel 22-250 wich was a little more accurate but i didn't like carrying it around. I also have not spent near as much time in load development with my t3 as i did with my savage. the only thing i do not like about the t3 is loading the inline clip. minor inconvenince. excellent rifle.

Well, I'll tell you a rather long winded story about a T3 I had and the rifle that replaced it. I bought a Tikka Varmint in .222 rem. and tweaked the trigger, and started load development with an eye to using it to test .22 cal. cast bullets. I worked up the most accurate jacketed load I could, to use as a baseline, for my cast bullets, which I prefer to use. The best J-word load was about 1/2" at 100 and cast loads went 1 1/4" all after many sessions reloading and at the range. I wasn't happy and traded it pdq. I ordered a CPA single shot in .218 Mashburn Bee, which is more my kind of gun,all dolled up with fancy wood 1/2 octagon Badger Barrel, double set trigger, etc. I loaded up some arbitrary loads both Jacketed and cast, at this point I was only interested in fireforming to the Mashburn chamber. Lo and behold, my first groups blew everything the Tikka shot, right out of the water, I had to shake my head and look at the one hole groups w/j-word bullets, and nice 5/8" groups with cast, and it's only got better since!
So my learned friends, I'm here to tell ya', with everyone handing out the Tikka Koolaid, I ain't dranking any of it!!!!

All I wanted was an accurate .22 cal. that could shoot cast into well under an inch, the Tikka wasn't close, especially from a potentially accurate cal.( the .222). The .218 Mashburn Bee rules, as does the CPA/Badger combo.(and it's a switch barrel!!)

I'm not sure what your gettin at.
So a cheapy T-3 only shot 1/2" groups with your jacketed bullet load.
While your custom Mishmash shot better with cast bullets.
What twist is in the Mismash?? vs the T-3

Crappy 1/2" groups out of a pencil barrel sportin rifle, imagine the like
