Tikka T3X -- Disappointed...

When you factor in a adding a detach mag and decent recoil pad on a Vanguard you are at $900. Having a detach mag on any rifle ups the price quite abit.

Cheers!!

It does indeed Scott....... but not everyone likes a detach mag....... me personally, I have an all ruger lineup.... some detach mag, some not etc........ have hunted with blind, floorplate and detach rifles throughout my years and none of them matter to me more than having the same action does..... and most of their competitors already had decent recoil pads....

Don't get me wrong.... I am no tikka hater.... I thought the t3 was a decent rifle for the money (although I don't like the plastic bolt shroud)...... but that's just me...... I also think the vanguard is a great rifle for the money, but the stocks never felt right to me (again, personal preference)......

If the Rifle is for you, then fill your boots...... they are certainly accurate and reliable........ and they made some Sakos look like overpriced Tikkas imop.....

If it's wha you like, go for it....... unless you like savage..... f**k savage...... lol

I just don't see how the small improvements justifies the huge price hike.......

I picked up a new T3x in a Stainless .223, 8" twist. $999 for it so I don't think it was bad. They seem to shoot and I hope this one does...

Google image search seems to support your first instinct...... mounted backwards....

And yes, that trigger guard does not look stock.....

Trigger guard is from Mountain tactical and the magazine isn't pushed in all the way...not backwards

Stock is a Boyd's prairie hunter....Near rail and alphamount, SWFA scope

Fair enough on the trigger guard........ from the rifles I have seen that bevel on the bottom of the mag should be in the front, not in the rear......

Sorry dude... your mag is not properly inserted by your own admission....... and it is cleariy backwards.......

If you want to refute me, that's cool...... I don't know everything and never will....... and you may prove me wrong, and that's cool too....

But the only thing that would change my opinion is a pic of your mag seated properly.......

Well, I finally scratched a 5 year itch last week and purchased a Tikka t3x Battue. I love this short barrelled style of bolt action, and the European Battue sights are perfect for the kind of hunting I do. I paid $1082+taxes. I took it to the range of Tuesday for a break in....and here are my thoughts.

1. The fit and finish of the rifle are very good. The stock is synthetic, and it is blued nicely. We aren't talking anything fancy. But its Good.
2. The bolt action is smoooooth. Long, but smooth. The action is long, and as the caliber is 308. I know there has been a compromise in the design. Its a short action caliber in a long action receiver. A problem? Nope. But an obvious point of cost savings on Tikka's part. It does not affect the performance of the rifle. And short or long action - That bolt is slick, smooth and solid. Very impressive.
3. The 'pointability' of the rifle is - For me personally - Exceptional. Balanced, ergonomic, fast. Excellent. Better than any lever I've carried and almost high end shotgun balanced. A huge selling point for me.
4. Accuracy report: Wow. At 50m, off a sandbag, open sights, 1 1/2 group with my first 3 shots. 15 rounds later, after coming to understand the sights a little better, I'm shooting 3 shot clover leafs. On the zero. With open sights, no adjustments at all. This with Factory Winchester Deer Season XP ammo. I can't imagine how well this will shoot with a decent optic on it. But It is very very impressive.
5. Safety Mechanism. Simple, accessible, switch type. Easy to operate, relatively silent. I can't help but think for a european rifle it feels a little cheap and almost too easy to disengage. But it is well placed and functional. For the price, this should be a three position safety.

In summary - I'm pleased. Could I buy a synthetic stocked bolt action that shoots as accurately for $400 less? Probably. Would that cheaper rifle it suit my specific needs (size, weight, accuracy, build quality, sight configuration). Nope.

All that being said, I totally get why people are underwhelmed with the T3x series. Why spend more when something cheaper will do the same job just as well? The same can be said of any firearm. Beauty (and utility) is in the eye (and objectives) of the beholder. I like mine and am pleased with the purchase. Happy Shooting!
