I do own, and have owned, quite a few Tikka T3s. I recently acquired a T3X in 7 x 64, which is a new-to-me cartridge.

The receiver top has a whole bunch of holes in it, and it is not apparent to me what purpose they all might serve. See pic:

Does anybody KNOW what these are about? I am looking for knowledge, not opinions here thanks.

From what I see online, scope bases for the T3 and T3X are interchangeable. Is this true? My only spare set of suitable items are a pair of steel Talley's from a T3 I formerly owned.

Thanks for any advice.

Doug

The big hole is there for the Sako optilock rings/rails. I've used the Mountain Tactical rails as the poster above. I think they still ship directly to Canada.

Tikka flat top receivers are all about mounting options. There are rails, traditional bases (including the Sako Optilocks), and ringmounts which use the screw holes. Some will use the recoil pin hole as well. There are other direct mount options which clamp to the dovetail, I use Sportsmatch rings which both clamp to the dovetail and rely on the recoil pin hole to keep them in place. Sako, Burris, and Warne also make direct-mount rings for the dovetail.

I have a TX3 and bought optilock bases and rings and guess I got the wrong ones. One base fits the other is narrower and doesn't so I have to try again.

Thanks for the replies and private messages. I have bought a rail that will hopefully fit the screw holes and cover up all of the extra holes!

Yes, Sako optilock bases have a wider front and narrow rear. They use a different part number than the Tikka optilock bases do.

My understanding is the two smaller un-threaded holes are utilized on the TACT A1 and or CTR versions. They just went with a one action flavor for all on the T3x. I recently picked up a set of Sports Match rings and was able to utilize one of the smaller holes at rear as a recoil pin.

Those holes are for Optilok rings (which I would NOT recommend). Any rail /1-piece base made for the t3, or any 2-piece rings made for ANY Tikka centrefire rifle since the 60s will work on your rifle.
