Tikka T3X SS 7mm-08 looking for advice

Until he mentioned elk, I was thinking .243 would be a good choice. 6.5 Swede factory ammo is a bit limited IMO, but if he's going to reload, most anything is possible.
How is brass availability in 7-08 and 6.5x55? Other than Winchester, I mean?

308 brass is everyplace. Just neck it down to 7mm and fire form it

7-08 brass common by Hornady, Winchester, Lapua, Nosler, and in the past Remington
6.5 same and a bit more euro offerings, Privi/PPU & Norma

The factory mags that come with them are very short. The short action that cam with my 7mm-08 some factory ammo was only 5 thou from the end of the mag. Did not like that. 270/30-06 mags are the same was very short. I wouldn't even consider using a long action round in a t3 because the mags don't let you seat out at all beyond factory specs.

Yes I am using the long action mag to seat 162gr out far. Can still fit 46-46.5gr of h4350 behind the bullet easily. Seating those at 2.800 would lose major case capacity.

He bought the 7-08.So how does the long action magazine feed and how far are you seating them,he is going to be reloading and it would be great to seat them out further but stock mag won't work for that and he does't want to single feed but could for load developement till he gets a long action magazine.

You also need to get the long action bolt stop. It’s $80 to get here.
Feeding is perfect. I seating to just over 2.950” with lots of room to go farther yet

It’s not a factory barrel. That thing was as good as a pry bar. That said lands are 2.956 if I remember right. I only use ogive measurement these days anymore

Am I reading this right. You went with a T3 7-08, and it shot ####tty with the factory barrel, so you rebarreled?

If so, I'm surprised to say the least. I've had plenty of them, and they all shot great, and minimum load development.

You are reading that right. Wasted pounds of powder and boxes of bullets nothing was ever repeatable.

I have heard that the Tikkas in 7-08 can be fussy, but I thought that was an isolated case. Did you change the twist rate with the new barrel?
Mine started out as a .308, I rebarreled to .243 with a used barrel from the EE. If anything, it shoots better than it did before.

It has a #5 contour 8 twist 26" long threaded muzzle.

i myself like ball powder with mag primers of course Try Win 760 in your 7mm-08 Great in the 7x57 and .250 Savage too! Harold

I have seen a lot of 7mm-08, 7x57 and 7mm Rem mags be fussy loading Hornady SST bullets. Once you find the load they llike, they are fine.
