I'm just about to replace my old .308 with a Tikka for the same cartridge. I'm trying to decide between the Tikka CTR and the Varmint. I'll be using the rifle mostly on the range, out to 600 yards but I don't compete anymore- I just shoot for fun now. It will occasionally be pressed into use as a hunting rifle for bear (with a scope swop)- guide/ outfitter doesn't like .243s for bear, and my missus doesn't like my 270 WSM.
The CTR has a big mag (10 rounds) which is neither here nor there for me. The short barrel is handy, but the long barrel may be better on the range, and if it really bugs me I can have it chopped. The Varmint has the same mags as SWMBO's .243- bonus.
