Time for a new cleaning rig...

For home cleaning I use wooden dowels(come in 48"), different dia. for different calibres. Also have fishing rod sections that I remove eyelets, etc. Don't know if this is OK or not. Haven't heard of anyone using these or any pros or cons about it.

Fiber glass is very abrasive.Given that it also flexes a great deal, allowing the rod to rub the barrel,I would not be using this method to clean barrels.

X2! Wood tends to pick up and easily embed foreign materials that may be abrasive as well, so that would rule it out for me. I stand solidly in the Dewey [or Parker-Hale] rods and bore guides camp. Eagleye.

Cleaning a gun is like trying to lose weight- it's easier to eat healthy so you don't need to work off the weight later, than it is to spend countless hours on the treadmill.

I use UBC and clean every 400-500 rounds on average. I'd rather prevent fouling from accumulating than cleaning it out every 20 shots.

The rare time that I do need to clean the rifle, I use a Dewey rod and Dewey bore guides, though...

jakfrost,
If you can't find what you need here in Canada you can order from Sinclair International.. They have everything that you need..
I own and use both Dewey and BoreStix rods and prefer BoreStix as the bearings in their handles allow you to measure twist a lot easier than Dewey rods.. Also you don't need a male/female adapter to use a brush.. It appears that Sinclair no longer carries BoreStix so you'll have to do a google on them..
For a bore guides get Sinclairs Adjustable Bore Guide if you can't find a Dewey guide.. To be frank I haven't seen a Dewey guide..
As said above you'll need two, one for under 25 cal. and one for 6.5 - 30cal.
Also if you order from Sinclair get a chamber mop to clean any cleaning residue out of your chamber after cleaning your bore..
For field use I would take a bore snake in case you get water in the bore but that is about it.. I dumped a canoe once pre - Bore Snake.. What a pain!

Jordan,
Thanks for the first hand info on UBC.. I have been toying with using that product and you pushed me over the edge..:)
